This is what happens when you present something, delay it, remove features, and delay it some more.

Download Squad calls Paul Thurrott a "Genuine Windows Enthusiast".

IMO, they can delay it as long as they want, they'll still end up with 85% of the market. And probably 90% of that 85% aren't smart enough to run anything else anyway.

I don't care about market share, tbh. I just think this is ridiculous, and while Microsoft sits on its pedastal, its competitors are chipping away the foundation. There is no excuse for delays, lost features, and the problems they are experiencing when they literally have unlimited resources.

I could go on my Apple campaign:)p), but there is no need to. Their (MS) poor track record lately speaks for itself.

On that note, I can't say I've ever read anything like this where Paul totally went off on MS and Windows.

"Unlimited resources" doesn't mean squat when you have "limited people" spending them.

I guess I put a little more emphasis on market share than you do; something could be the greatest product on the planet, but if no one uses it, it won't be around long.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

Late, limited, and bug-filled new stuff has been a way of life with Microsoft for years, which is why I'm NEVER an early adopter of their new stuff. My newly rebuilt puter would run it just fine, in 64 bit mode even, but I'll wait a while before jumping. I waited 'til Service Pack-1 a before going to XP, and I'm still using Office 2000.

And there's not really much NEED for most people to change early (except for new computer buyers who will be stuck with it automatically; remember the vast numbers of buyers that got stuck with Windows ME?. 64 bit OS is nice, but most of your current programs are all 32 bit, and it will be a while before most new ones are 64 bit as well. Dual core support is nice, but most HOME users don't run multiple intense programs, so it will have limited benefit for most apps; again software support will take a while, and most of your old software doesn't support it even if the OS does. DX10 is supposed to be a huge improvement for gaming, and WON'T run on WinXP, but again, it will be a while before new games start using it; game development takes years, and game engines tend to linger a LONG time. And a lot of OLD stuff doesn't run on XP, or not well, despite Compatibility Mode. I still dust off and play OLD games that I'm fond of, and some of those flat won't run in XP. I'll be interested to see what won't run in Vista. And peripherals are ALWAYS an issue with a new OS. Some manufacturers flat won't make new drivers for their old hardware, no matter how fond you are of that piece that does just fine for what you do.

As Obi-wan was fond of saying: Waiting is.

Same can be said for a bad product everyone uses--eventually they stop.

Windows XP pro does everything I want it to,I cant really think of anything I want that does more, functionality can always be added to xp pro,the file system could be changed to increase data storage, but to me the whole change is on the surface,it has to look and act different to make people think they're getting something new and different like vista

So are you saying you think one day everybody will stop using Windows?

You maybe pleasently supprised if you decide to use it Rikky, yes the glitz gets all the publicity, but thats only the surface coating, the OS is IF it continues the same path as its on now be much more user friendly than XP, in regards to networking... wireless support is much improved, security ( UDP is a pain at present, but getting better ), troubleshooting and the help and support in early form is nice with simple explanations for all user levels.

only negatives are the missing WinFS, software and driver support... but that also takes some input from the 3rd parties to at least meet half way, 64bit support is much improved.

but still early days... and much better to fully judge a product when its acyually released into the mass market, now its just opinions and conjecture :)

    Excellent read.

Have to agree and if it is built on wobbly foundations and MS has increased its market share by over aggressive deceptive means with significant infigthing, well this will be highlighted in the near future as all the chipping at the base may yet cause a landslide.

It does seem they market place was made a lot of baseless promises this may leave many feeling bitter and hopefully we will see some more innovations in Linux with a more friendly GUI OS become avail in the future. Either way we are going to see some significant evolution in OS in the near future.

I think big companies can fall.

    IBM comes to mind.

I think I've seen Bill's all new magic show before. Still I never figure out how he makes the promised features disappear before my eyes.
Must be time for another name change... what about CrockOs?

Still a good six months left to re-add some of the missing bits, like WinFS etc kinda keeps changing each released "staged" build to what components are in/out... heads up for Beta2!

have to say tho in security terms its very good as not many if any firewalls or AVs ( got Avast Home to work in a manual scan only, resident mode not working yet ) work with it at present and I havnt gained a virus or malware issues, in going naked surfing ;)

This doesn't surprise me, in fact I expect Micro$$oft to stuff up or change direction.

I still remember William saying that the Internet wouldn't last, or that Micro$$oft would put an end to viruses in a couple of years. :)

Hmm, I'm glad I've learnt how to use Linux now .... :D

Something has really gone wrong with this release of Windows. Maybe they hired some good designers for the concept stages, but had a crappy team for the implementation. Who knows.

The whole UAP thing is a bit crazy. Unix type OSes have had this great little program called sudo for the last couple of decades. It means that you can run specific tasks in a root environment with limitations. These days you can even use something like AppArmour (which comes with SuSE 10 enterprise) to further lock down tasks run with root privileges, and even lock down on tasks without root privileges to prevent them interfering with other tasks running on the system!

Microsoft wouldn't get any flack for copying that idea, since it's not patented and it's a good idea! I understand the need for nice clicky boxes to make things user friendly, but berating the user whenever they do something that requires elevated privileges is silly. If the user does something that actually requires root access (like actually changing the system - not deleting a shortcut on the desktop) then prompt them for a password. GNOME does this, and I expect KDE does too.

I think a lot more thought should have been put into the implementation of the feature set.

Well, at least it won't be as bad as Windows ME....

Don't know about others but I've had nothing but probs with XP lately out of the last 5 updates (within the last month) I have had 3 significant OS probs. One I had to use the "Recovery Console" to obtain the repair registry just so I could get in to restore to a previous point, another Windows Defender became corrupted and essentially affected at least 3 other apps (all security) and the most recent was an explorer.exe error kept appearing and the Explorer had to be refreshed. Once again I had to resort to a previous restore point and ironically it was just before an optional MS update. I've just about had a gut full and this is with their apparently stable OS.

Is this just me or are others experiencing similar dillemas?!?

Which version of Linux are you using Goldfish?

I watched OS Revolution the other day all about the uprising of Linux. My biggest question is can I run my games and use my security software with Linux? and How difficult is it to get your head round it?

Any feedback would be great on my MS dillemas (would a fresh install possibly resolve some issues) or Linux greatly appreciated.

They have just made this claim again (Major Geeks news story) and that Vista will put the AV, Firewall and Spyware Co.'s out of buisness, lol. This must be delusional self praising claptrap for the naive. For goodness sake they can't even get Windows Defender right and it is the most buggiest app I have used to date.

I've been having ongoing problems since a very recent critical update/s.

My desktop will change from silver to the default XP blue on every reboot.

Not a big deal, but it's annoying and never done it before the update.

Something grey and squishy that significantly resembles dog excretment and prob has the same effect where you certainly wouldn't want to get any on your persons and having an overwhelming, repulsive and pungent odour.
