Trying to clean-up a hp pavilion, thought I had it licked but not likely. Here is the situation now: spybot found a few cookies, adaware found some too but also found shlwapi.dll which cannot be deleted, and avg found no viruses but that file? was changed.

I get many errors when doing scans. When searching I receive "when you send it might be possible for others to see that information." When trying to run housecall antivirus I receive "Iexplore cause invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll." When trying to run bitdefender I receive "Iexplore cause invalid page fault in module mshtml.dll." When trying to run panda scan I receive "current security settings prohibit running active x controls." Lastly, when trying to update windows I receive "unable to update software."

    Any additional scans or ideas?

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

Sorry bout not attaching my hijack the first time, thought the errors would help. I ran spybot and it found nothing, and also ran SuperAntispy and it found viewpoint toolbar. Still the issues mentioned in earlier post are there. Also cannot run normal setup because if I do the computer will not boot. I had to stop the last three programs under autoexec to fix the problem.

Please attach the logs from the online scans and the other requested logs. Since you have Win98 try to run CounterSpy and attach this log as well.

I decided to reinstall internet explorer 6.0 over the top of the current installation, now my errors are gone and I was able to complete the virus scans.

I have attached active scan, but didn't save bitdefender. It did find one problem with active scan file and deleted it though.

Were you able to install and run CounterSpy? If not, before you run this you may want to run CCleaner to cleanup all the cookies and junk so the log won't be as long.
    Running CCleaner...
