My wife's laptop has something that's corrupted her picture files and a notebook window opens with a long article telling the files will be lost unless we go to a site that starts with paytor..... as the url.

I installed malwarebytes and ran it and it found nearly 2000 items that I quarantined.

Anyone aware of this issue ? A friend of my wife has the same issue with her's as well.

I'm afraid it sounds like you have been infected by a ransomeware infection called cryptowall. There is nothing that can currently be done to reverse the effects of this.

Yes as Kestrel13! states, this is one of the CryptoWall infections. Your files are most likely lost. We don't recommend trying to pay the randsom as there are not guarantees what you will get when you pay.

In addtion to the link Kestrel13! gave you, you can also read the below which sometime helps people get a few files back from Shadow Copy but you may have a new form of infection that makes this impossible.
