Hello again Major Geeks! I'm cleaning another system for a friend.

This HP Pavilion ze4800 laptop with WinXP Home has PC Antispyware 2010 on it as well as other unknown nastiness I'm sure. I've gone through the cleanup procedure and the READ ME with the following results.

SUPER Antispyware would not run. Clicked the icon and nothing happened.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware would not run. Clicked the icon and nothing happened.

    Combo fix ran. Logs attached

RootRepealer would not run. Clicked the icon, program started to load with "Initializing, please wait..." then stopped with a box that only says "Error".

    MGTools ran. Logs attached.

As always, thank you very much for the help you provide!
    Bruce

Please download and run Win32kDiag per the below instructions:
    • Download this Win32kDiag and save to C:\Win32kDiag.exe. You must save it here!!!!
    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

Now download Junction, zip to your Windows folder
    • Please download Junction.zip and save it to your Windows folder (i.e, C:\Windows\Junction.zip This assumes C:\ is your Windows boot drive.)
    • Now unzip it and put junction.exeinto the Windows folder (i.e., C:\Windows\junction.exe)
    • Do not try to run it right now. We will run something that uses it later.

Now we need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
    • Download and save inhertit.exe to your Desktop: Inherit.exe
    • It must be in your Desktop or the below fix will not work!
Now run the C:\MGtools\FixPerm.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • A command prompt window opens and also a license agreement from SysInternals will appear for Junction.
    • Accept the license agreement and the scan will begin.
    • Wait until it finishes we can take a while to run since it scans your whole harddisk. e patient and don't do anything else while it is scanning.
    • The command prompt window should close when it finishes.
    • While this is running, you will get several/many popups that have a title Finish and say OK. Just click the OK button each time. This is an indication that it has found a file and has attempted to fix permissions. Depending on how many files that need to be fixed, you could get only a few or many of these popups.
Why is this PC being run with no protection?

Now please delete the below copy of MGtools. It does not belong here.
    C:\Documents and Settings\RRT Service\Desktop\5MGtools.exe

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
    C:\Documents and Settings\RRT Service\Local Settings\temp

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the Win32kDiag log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

There's no protection because I cleaned out all the old programs. I'll install new ones as soon as everything is cleaned up and the internet connection returns.

MGTools removed from desktop. It was an extra copy just parked there.

    Removed Messenger.

    Ran Win32kDiag. Log attached.

FixPerm.bat failed. A repeating box that says Finished with a button that says OK. Clicking it just repeats over and over. I skipped it and moved on to ComboFix.

Ran ComboFix with the recommended add-on. Log attached

    Both temp directories were empty.

    Ran CCleaner.

    Ran GetLogs.bat. File attached.

Still unable to connect to the internet. Wireless detects router but is unable to connect. Says the network may no longer be in range.

    Thanks for all the help!!

No! This is what you actually ran according to your logs.

No it did not. Read my instructions again. They told you this is what could happen as it finds and correct permissions on files. You need to run it again and keep clicking OK until it finishes. Then you will need to rerun the MGtools\GetLog.bat program to create and attach a new MGlogs.zip file.

Hardwire your connection and see if it works.

Oops! I know better than that. Sorry.

Reran FixPerm.bat all the way through.

    Reran GetLogs.bat. Log attached.

Won't connect hardwired either. The connection constantly flips back to network cable unpluggged. I'm not sure if this is a malware problem or not.

It may be a driver issue since your logs are all clean. You will most likely have to work this in the Hardware or Networking Forums. You could try deleting your interfaces is Device Manager and then rebooting and allow Windows to automatically reinstall the drivers. I see you were doing something with your Broadcom hardware files on 10/25/2009
    Code:
    2009-10-25 00:53 . 2003-05-02 10:58 77824 ------w- c:\windows\system32\BCMWLU00.EXE
    2009-10-25 00:53 . 2003-05-02 10:58 45056 ------w- c:\windows\system32\BCMWLD2K.EXE
Make sure you are using the correct drivers. Normally drivers/services for wireless interfaces would show in the logs. Yours do not. Typically this would mean the software/drivers are not installed.

Let's do the below one more time to be safe.

    • Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please attach this log
    C:\win32kdiag.exe -f -r

    Here's the last log.

I'll continue to work the network issue separately. Interestingly it will connect both wired and wireless at work but neither connection will work here at home. I've never seen behavior like this before.

Since the logs are clean I'm going to move ahead with the usual final steps.

Thanks again to you and Major Geeks!

Reinstalled the wireless driver and let the utility control it instead of Windows. All is working well.

    Great news. ;)

Just incase you did not do ALL of the final instructions, here they are.

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
