Pc Case ging shocks because of monitor cable

Hi there,

I have noticed the bottom of my case gives small shocks to my fingers when i touch it even if power cable is removed from psu, i then discovered that once i removed the monitor cable from video card, shocking stops. Is this a cause for concern? Is there a way to ground the inside of the case to prevent this? Thanks.

 

Unplug the monitor now it has a short (or the cord) shocks+pc=disaster,replace cord first

thanks man, i replaced monitor's power supply cord, because i had a europen connector (with 2 pins) in 3 holed socket. doesnt seem to be shorting any more at the moment

You may have had a reversed hot-neutral pair in the monitor's power plug or cable. I'm assuming the third hole in the socket is a ground.

If so, it probably doesn't pose the fire hazard that a short does -- but under some circumstances, it can be bl---y dangerous. As you found out, it can result in a "hot" chassis.

You might also want to make sure that the hot and neutral wires aren't reversed in the wall socket. It happens. A socket tester that will tell you that can be had for less than $10.

 

i was having lots of probs with my vid card (ati x850xt PE edition) and im assuming it is because of this shorting prob. ie. pc wud hang as soon as any 3d application kicks in, ie. 3d section of loaded games, flashy java in websites (eg. the worldmap in www.asus.com) and even receiving a msg in msn which causes the tab to flash in the taskbar, was always solving this prob by dismantling my pc and putting it back together again! im hoping it wont occur again since shorts have gone
