Ok, first off, I have Windows XP Home, a newish PC (I'm here for help, not cos I know my PC inside out, but if you need further info, just ask and I'll try and find out), and run PC-Cillin as my antivirus.
I've been foolishly downloading some games from Limewire, and have relied on PC-Cillin to tell me whether they were clean or infected before opening the zipped files - it seemed to be doing a good job of filtering out the bad stuff. Apparently not as good as I first thought, because a couple of times csrss.exe has tried to connect to the net only to be blocked by my firewall. And upon looking into things, I had 2 of those files on my PC; one in the System 32 Folder where it should be, the other a bogus. So I killed the process and deleted the .exe file and it seems to be gone.
But the fact that got through and PC-Cillin didn't pick it up made me worried, so I went to run a scan with it... and the scanner opens, scans a few files, and then the scan window closes, as if I've crossed the window off. It won't do more than a few seconds scan before quitting. Apart from resetting my PC just to make sure it wasn't just being temperamental, I've since downloaded AVG and found, well, several trojans sitting in those Limewire files, and got rid of them, hoping one of them might be what's blocking PC-Cillin from working. No luck. According to AVG my PC is now clean, but PC-Cillin is still doing the quit thing. I'm not running both simultaneously, either, because I know that can cause problems.
I have googled it and can't seem to find anywhere mentioning that particular problem... are there any suggestions short of reinstalling PC-Cillin? (I have no idea where the disc is at the moment :| )

Can you update PC-cillin on line? Where was the file you deleted located? The fact that the firewall asked weather to allow or not shows it is working. You might want to run a system file check for starters. Start, Run, sfc /scannow
You may need your Windows disk for that. Have you tried Trend Micro support? http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/index.php
There are spyware info and malware removal forums here at MajorGeeks.:major

I don't use limewire, but others in the house do, it is running on one computer only, I won't have it on my own computers. I use PC-cillin 2006 on the limewire system and haven't as of yet had any problems. The only real problems I've had with PC-cillin is its very large log files on a used and malware infested computer, which it cleaned up nicely, and the fact that if I run all of its features it drags the computers with slower processors and a lesser amount RAM. Try Trend Secure and the first of the MajorGeeks links, after that the malware forum. Hope you can sort it out. Watch out for those zip files, eh? You can set the scanner to do a bit better of a job scanning them. Or unzip them to a location other than the drive, partition, that Windows is on, hopefully C:, and scan them there.

OK, thanks for the system file check suggestion; it appears I need to find my WIndows XP disc, if they gave me one when I bought the computer. If so, it's somewhere in my house *sigh*. Will post results when I try it.

I assume that the update feature is working fine, as it brings the box up and then tells me it is up-to-date. I have tried scanning an individual folder (via the right-click menu), and it completes the scan just fine. Yet when I try to do a full scan through the actual program, it just won't do it, as I described. It won't get past a couple of seconds without the scan exiting itself. I don't seem to have any other problems with it, though, as, yes, the firewall also appears to be working. I have no problems with system resources or disk space or that, and it's not the whole program that shuts down, just the antivirus scanner. The spyware scanner still works.

That file I deleted, the csrss.exe, was in C:/Windows; apparently the only place it should appear is in C:/WIndows/System32. But I have restarted my PC since and that second file no longer seems to be coming up (just thought it was worth mentioning as the antivirus didn't actually pick it up, being a duplicate name of a legit system file, so I don't know if I got the lot of it. There might be another part of it somewhere on my PC that is hindering PC-Cillin... no idea. It was only the sudden onset of its tryong to access the net that drew my attention to it in the first place :S)

No, I haven't tried PC-Cillin's support, believe it or not - I spent ages clicking around on their AU website trying to find where I could submit a case by email, but with no luck. Only a phone number, which, well, I'm not to fond of using. I have sent off an email one now thanks to your link, just have to wait and see what they have to say.

Yeah, thanks, I noticed the other forums, but since I'm not entirely sure PC-Cillin is acting up due to a virus or whether it's something else entirely, I thought I'd try it here first.

    Thanks for your help :)

Uh, yeah, they didn't supply a Windows XP disc when we bought the PC. Is there any other way to do that check without having the disc?

Thanks for your time in trying to help - scanner back up and working now after downloading the 2007 version instead of 06 of PC-Cillin.
