    I'm not at my PC at the moment, I'm in Turkey. My sister is using my PC and she told me she keeps having this problem for signing in MSN and Yahoo, she gets an error. Well both my sister and I don't really know much about computers (I do know more than her though) so I told her to just do a system restore to when the PC last worked, so she did and it all seemed fine, until she restarted the PC this morning.
    She told me she gets this black screen and nothing will happen until she presses F1 or Ctrl, then it will take her to the login screen on the PC. Then after she logs in and tries connecting to yahoo, she gets the same error and the PC date has been changed to Monday Sept 12th 2042. So I really don't know what is wrong. Probably a trojan/virus or something.
    At the bottom of the "Error report contents" it says;
    the following files will be included in this error report
    C:\DOCUME..\....\......\Temp\42_appcompat.txt

    msn error code 80048820

    If anyone can help, that would be great but please put it in simple steps.
    As I will need to explain it to my sister, which will be hard given the fact that I'm in a different country!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Actually this does not sound like malware at all. You have your choice, I can move this to the Software Forum, or you can run thru our malware cleaning procedure (just to be sure it is not malware) which I will give below.

    Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run theREAD & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can running steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.

    Well if you think it shouldn't be in this forum and will be better in the software, then please move it. :)

    I don't think my sister will be able to follow those sets for the malware removal, I don't want her to try and then have her do something wrong and really mess up the PC. Otherwise she'll have to wait until I'm back home to try and fix it.

    Okay I will move it now. If at a later time, it seems like malware is causing problems, it can be moved back.
