Hi there, I am new and not sure if this has been asked or not, I did search but didn't find anything that seems the same as this.

Anyway a couple of nights ago I decided to do a virus scan with nod32. nod found no threats, so I scanned with spybot and malware bytes. Both found a couple of viruses, and said I needed to restart to clean them. I did this with spybot and it said it cleared them.

Next I ran an overdue windows update on my computer and as it was installing the various (numerous) updates my computer reset itself, no prompt to do so. At first I thought it was the update, but as windows loaded up itr eset again. This continued to happen, it ranged from around 15-20 seconds displaying the background and loading programs before restarting.

I ran windows under settings that last worked and it continued to reset. Safe mode/and with networking work though. I then restarted and selected the option whereby if the computer needs to restart it wont, I got a blue screen when windows loaded saying maybe a hardware issue or so on was at fault.

I don't know what it is that causing it, anyone had something similar or have an idea? Or is there any information I need to post up to help with an answer?

Thanks and apologies for the long post, Just tried to cover the things that happened before and after it.

    Cheers,

If you are able to operate in safe mode w/networking, then you may wish to consider doing the READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide and starting a thread in the malware section to be sure all the virus' have been removed.

You should also allow the computer to BSOD and tell us exactly what the error message is.

I ran checks with nod, spybot and malware bytes in safe mode after updating them just to make sure and they found nothing. Forgot to mention that in my first post.

    Whats BSOD mean exactly please?

    Cheers

Haha I'm a muppet that I didn't recognise blue screen of death.
Ive ran the various programs in the cleaning link you sent, combox fix was the only one to find anything, this was in the log:

    c:\windows\Installer\28241e.msi
    c:\windows\Installer\c3c5.msi
    c:\windows\system32\nfr.assembly
    c:\windows\system32\nfr.gpref

I will run the don't restart on failure option and write what the message says here in a few minutes

Ok heres the blue screen message:

    STOP <OOOO21a (Fatal System Error)
The Windows SubSystem System Process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x (Not sure if this is supposed to be longer, as it stopped at the edge of the screen)
    <00000001 (0x7c9106c3 0x0069f36c),
The system has been shut down,

    Beginning dump of physical memory,
    Physical memory dump complete,
Contact your system administrator or support group for further assistance.

There is also a pink square in the bottom right of the blue screen.

As I said, if you want to check for malware, finish the instructions and start a thread in the malware forum to we can be sure it is not a malware issue.

I have no idea what that error message means. Did it not reference a device?

The message seems to have changed from the one I had the other day, this one is much shorter, the other filled most of the screen up.
I did read somewhere about booting windows through the XP cd and trying to repair any problems.
My main problem is that I don't fancy calling in an expert as they charge crazy amounts, (£60 per hour for the local one) if its something that could be fixed without formatting.

I'm beginning to think its not a malware issue as following the guide and using the programs stated only resulted in combo fix removing the 4 files I wrote earlier.

Could it perhaps be some sort of driver issue, after updating windows something is reacting to whats been installed/already there. I'm no whizz at computers so this is not something I've much idea about really.

Right click My Computer / properties ....open the device manager tab and look for any X's, ?'s, !'s.

Your other choice is to do a system restore to before this happened.

Thanks for the info, I've just checked that, and opened each of the + sections. The only thing that stood out to me as I didnt see any Xs or !s, was that I did see a yellow ? mark which when I expanded it said 'unknown device' and if checked on asks for a driver to be installed, however it can't find one. I checked it properties and it said 'ROOT\LEGACY_WAM\0000'. It also says its not been configured correctly whatever it is.
Can uninstall it apparently too as thats an option.

I was thinking of a system restore, though I'm in the process of backing up a lot of files just in case I do something bad that causes a format. But I won't be near completing that till wednesday as tomorrow I have uni and sport tennis practise in the evening. But if a restore is best I guess I'd have to go with that.
