PC not booting up

Hello all,
I have a Gateway that I can't get to start up normally (running XP home) but I can get in to safe mode. The problem is when in safe mode I cannot get online to download any AVG updates or malware removal tools. I have fixed problems before using this site and want to try to fix these problems they are three computers setup on a network for resident use in an apartment complex that I live in and once I get them cleaned up and running smoother I want to limit the access to downloading files but at the same time not take too much away from users....I am going to start school soon and would like some help learning some basic networking skills on these before I start. Thanks in advance for any help

At this point, we don't really know if you are having malware problems. You should describe what happens when you try to boot in normal mode.

As far as the malware removal procedure, if you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools on another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them. You will need to do the reverse to get the logs back to us if you still have no internet access after running the cleaning procedures.
