Sorry to create another thread, but this is a completely different problem and it's fairly urgent (I need to access some files before tomorrow morning that are on the PC).

Anyways, we've put everything together, the graphics card's fine now and has the appropiate cooling on, the firewire issue isn't sorted but it's not important anyway.

At present, as soon as the monitor is plugged into the PC, it kind of ... turns off, regardless of if the PC is on or not. When you unplug the monitor cable from the PC the monitor seems to come back to life, the power button lights up, and it comes up with the invalid display (or similar) message. As soon as you plug the monitor back in the same thing happens!

I thought it could of been the graphics card so I've tried fitting a super old GeForce 2 into it, which had the exact same problem. So it's not the graphics card. I also tried unplugging the hard drives just incase, but again no luck. It's got me completely stumped ;( Any suggestions would be EXTREMELY welcome, I'm geting kinda desperate now, thanks! xx

Have a spare monitor to try out?

That's a normal message just stating that the monitor isn't detecting a signal (because you disconnected it).

    Also I forgot to add:

I've seen this problem before on some old sony monitors. These monitors had a tendancy to go into a standby mode and never come out of it (easily).

If you can, try resetting the monitor.
If you can't reset it, try unplugging it from the electrical outlet and just let it sit for 1/2 hour. (why 1/2 hour? That's how long I had to wait until it returned to normal.. maybe something to do with eletrical/static discharge).

try out another monitor or plug this one into another pc...my monitor used to do that...first a crt, which was corrected by just moving the analog cable around to get a better signal...and an lcd...and that was fixed by me getting a replacement video card.

Hey guys, thanks for the responces, unfortuantely though it's not a problem with the monitor, I've tried putting this one I'm using now onto the computer and it didn't work! Sigh. ;/ Like I said, I've also tried a new graphics card so I'll assume it's a more serious mobo/cpu problem!
