Hello and sorry to ask such a simple question, but, is it better for the life of the pc to leave it on 24x7 or power up in the a.m. and off at night?

Turn it off any time it won't be used for 2 or more hours. I always power down my PC before I go to work, there's no reason for it to be sitting there doing nothing for 9 or 10 hours. It's unneeded wear on the components and leaves the system vulnerable to power problems (outages, brown outs, spikes/surges, etc) when it could just be turned off and safe.

I'm same as dlb, if not using PC for any length of time I turn it off, never had a PC die though from being left on 24/7 or turned off and on when needed.

    Hello
We feel better after hearing from you
Retired folks tend to use the machine intermittently as we are home all day. So, we will act like our pc:) - turn on in the a.m. and turn off at night.
    Thank you

I also keep mine on during the day but if I'm going to be away for a few hours, I press the off switch on the monitor (I do not have mine set to turn black during a period on non-use) and keep the display off to save a few watts.

We have ours to turn off both the hard disks and the monitor after 10 minutes.
I read there was problem with xp and stand by so we never use it.
It appears as though we all customize to suit out different needs.

Mine runs 24/7. I do turn the monitor off when not in use. I have NO reason behind this,it's just what I've always done don't know why.

I believe another point to consider is by leaving your PC on the whole time "may" make you a bit more vulnerable to online attacks, especially as many are constantly connected to the net nowadays via ADSL. Frankly I don't leave my TV, Radio, Car or any other form of machinery/appliance running when not being used so why leave the PC on.......greater power bill.

I have thought of that also,I'm home a lot so I'm on it off and on. If I leave for more than half the day I shut er down.
