    Hi all,
Nice to be here. My computer is ridden with all kinds of malwares and its really slow since last week.
Here are the problems which i'm facing:
    a) When i try to restart, superMWindow.exe doesn't close down and i have to manually end it.

    b) Whenever i open a new firefox window, my IE window also opens as a pop-up and they keep up popping up again and again. When i check in windows task manager, explorer.exe is always running at 50-70,000k even though i have manually cancelled all IE windows.

    c) Computer extremely slow. takes long time to open anything else.

    d) Can't copy and save any picture or download any link like save file as.

    e) Windows Defender keeps asking for restart.

    f) I'm seeing a new quick launch button in the lower display icons tray.

    g) Defender showing Virtumonde.O as malicious ware ( I have deleted virtumonde using one of the .exe files posted on this forum :)

    h) firefox crashes too often, recently all my bookmarks have disappeared.

Sorry for long post but i have serious problems with my pc.
I'm reading on other threads on how to start with removing all the malwares. BUt if any expert can guide me step by step, then it would be really helpful. If i'm doing anything wrong by posting here, please let me know what should i do first. I'm up for good advice.
I use McAfee antivirus and Ad-Aware SE personal edition in addition to Windows Defender.
    Thanks.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy Log - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • AVG Antispyware Log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
    • Bitdefender Log - from step 6
    • Panda Scan Log - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis Log
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs![/FONT]

    Hi all,
I'm back. Well, I kind of fixed my computer using vundofix.exe. But my computer is still very slow and it won't run big applications. So i'm trying to run all the steps. I have completed preliminary steps and i'm on BITDEFENDER step.
But the problem is that it is asking me to install a file(Bitdefender Onlinescanner 8) after i click on I agree and i click on install, nothing happens and it gives message " Setup cannot copy the file oscan81.ocx_x". It is trying to copy files from " C:\DOCUME~1\owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp". I have tried to locate the file and try to install again but its still giving me error messages. So, because of this reason i'm still stuck at this step.
Please let me know what should i do??? Any suggestions, help is welcome. Is there any other online scan which i can do? I have dedicated my whole day for this today. So please let me know. Thanks a lot.

    Just skip BitDefender and continue!

As Chaslang stated, just skip that scan and procede on. If you can't run the Panda Scan skip it as well but at least try because they are important in the removal of malware.

Once you have completed everything, post your logs and we'll go from there.

Thanks a lot , i have done pandascan and now i'm on the last step i.e. (HijackThis step).
But can you provide me with the link to download hijackthis. Apparently, the link provided by the majorgeeks is not working. Or should i search for Hijackthis 1.99.1 and download myself from some other client? Let me know.
    Thanks.

First, please disable any antivirus and/or antispy programs you have installed so they will not block this fix.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and proceed.

    Step 2:
Now scan with HijackThis and check the boxes for the following entries:
( Make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX )

Again, make sure ALL browser windows are closed when you click FIX.

    Step 3:
Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file fixme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the fixme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.
    Step 4:
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Step 5: Begin here after rebooting from Step 4!
Next Reset Web Settings & Default Security Settings

    Note for IE 6 users:
    To Reset Web Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.

If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK

    To Default Security Settings:
Right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Security Tab and click Default Level for Internet, Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, and Restricted Sites. For IE 7 users, simply click the "Reset all zones to default level" button.

    Note for IE 7 users:
Select Internet Options, then the Advanced Tab and then the Reset button under Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

    Step 6:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

    Step 7:
Finally, I would like you to install the current version of Sun Java: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 8:
After you have completed ALL of the above in the correct order, please attach the following logs.
    • HijackThis Log
    • ShowNew Log
    • GetRunKey Log
    • Avenger Log
Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Hi,
I have done all the steps mentioned in the previous posts. I couldn't find any instance with Sunbelt counterSpy as an element. Rest all i did as asked to do so.
I'm unable to use advanced buttons and upload log files right now. Will wait and do later.
    Thanks.

It's you! ;) However many people run into this issue at times. Click refresh a few times, or try emptying your browser cache and then click refresh. Also if using Internet Explorer, try FireFox. If using FireFox, try IE. One of these things to try will typically resolve your problem attaching files.

Download, install and run CCleaner to clean up cookies and temp files. If you have multiple user accounts, run this on each account.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we used SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger, the log (avenger.txt) and C:\avenger.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg, fixme1.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks a lot Bigarrick and Chaslang and all other people who often come on these forums and help each other.
Well, my pc is running better than before( atleast i can say about OS). But, my firefox crashed three times after i did all the steps mentioned. ( not that it didn't use to crash before :) )
Now the only visible things which i see could be problematic are:
    a) My realplayer takes a lot of time to start and shut down.
    b) And i see some of the processes running for some of the applications which i have already uninstalled way long ago.( e.g. - ipodservice, aolsoftware, ituneshelper, etc etc)
    c) And when i just close my laptop without shutting down, it takes considerable time to go to on STANDBY ( which i think is due to all the processes running)
Do you suggest that i can use MSconfig now and block some of the processes to run during start up?? Let me know.
I haven't yet done anything suggested by bigarrick in his last reply. So will do it and follow the malware protection guide.

Last but not the least, if anyone of you can give a little bit of insight of how to spot wrong files, malwares and check HijackThis logs and all the other logs, that would be really great.
Thanks a lot.:) It was really helpful.

P.S.- In future if i have any troubles with my PC, or if i have any technical question, can i post in this particular thread?

You can use Msconfig but if you want to kill some startup items we can remove unecessary entries from HJT.

If you're having issues with applications you can post in the Software Forum and those guys will help you with that.

The best way to learn is to read thru the forums and look at what we have other users remove and why. You can also go thru this thread below.

HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

It's best to create a new thread if in the future you have more malware issues.

Thanks a lot bjgarrick. Well, i will see the software section for my firefox problem. But its still there. It crashes often. Last time it crashed, i had to restart my PC. After that i see "Quick Launch Button" (rocket shaped) again in my system tray on the lower right corner which had disappeared after the clean up. I guess it shouldn't be there as it only came when i had lots of malwares.
    What should i do?

Can you help me in removing unnecessary applications to run on system start up?
Overall, my system runs better now.( but obviously not as fast as it used to when i bought it)
I haven't yet deleted the various log files and applications which i was asked to d/l during the malware cleanup process.
    Thanks.

The Firefox issue, be sure you have the latest version which is 2.0.0.9. I would uninstall, reboot and reinstall the updated version.

If this doesn't fix your issue I would post in the Software Forum.

Attach a fresh GetRunKey & HijackThis Log and we'll remove any unecessary items.

Regarding Firefox issue, i have already posted in the software section. I'm posting a fresh log of GetRunKeys and HijackThis. Please have a look and let me know what should i do next for removing unnecessary processes. Thanks.

P.S. - When i bought this m/c, i got it optimized. Is it the same thing as removing some of the unnecessary processes from starting on start-up? I wonder how they did it?

Did you purchase CounterSpy & AVG Anti-Spyware or were they installed during the READ ME? If you did not purchase them, you can uninstall both applications.

Have HijackThis fix the entries below...

Copy the contents of the below Quote Box to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file helpme.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.) Then double-click on the helpme.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to Add in to the registry, say yes.
Reboot after you complete the above and see how things are running.

Usually "optimized" means a system cleaning and a derag of the hard drive. If you would like to do this, I recommend Vopt 8.20, it's a 30 day trial but works great.
