i have copied this from my post in the hardware forum to see if anyone here can help. i have gone through all of the spyware routine advised prior to posting.

My PC always slows up on a Sunday evening around 8pm. programs take forever to open and it eventually hangs and i need to switch off without shutting down properly. i am running windows xp with service pack 2. I do not have anything scheduled for a Sunday that i can see so what can be causing this to happen only at this specific time each week?

There were 31 processes running last night when it slowed. svchost.exe was using 23,232k of memory - I have no idea what this process is, can anyone tell me what processes should be running and what can be stopped safely?

I cleaned and derfragged the drive yesterday and there is stacks of memory left (75% free)

    Intel P4, 2.66ghz, 512mb ddr, 80gb drive.

    Thanks

I doubt this is a malware problem. Sounds like you have something scheduled to run. Like an antivirus scan, a defrag, etc. You need to look at a complete process and application list while this is happening. svchost.exe is a valid process and you will typically find 3 to 4 (sometime more) running. Right now I have four of them running.
    1st one using 3,505 Kb
    2nd one using 22,420 Kb
    3rd one using 2,092 Kb
    4th one using 3,820 Kb

If you would like to be sure it is not a malware problem, you can run thru the procedures below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

Mystery solved. Turned out that norton speed disk was scheduled to defrag at that time, unbeknown to me!

A blessing in diguise i suppose as it has led me to getting rid of a heap of other troubles through the advise on this forum.

Thanks to all who helped ;)

You're welcome! Glad you got it worked out. (I knew it had to be a defrag! ;) )
