First of all thank you so much for running this site! I will be making a donation!

I have purchased Spyware doctor, I have Spybot and Adaware. I run Norton Internet Security 7.0.1.

For some reason the last few days my computer is running so slow. It's brand new, I got it for Christmas, it's a Dell Dimension E310.I hope this is not too much, I used Everest to get all tthis. lol.

None of my spyware softwares are finding anything. I have downloaded hijack this and can post my log, I want to make sure that's what I need to do first.

Do you have a bootable copy of Windows XP SP2? You will need to be able to boot to the recovery console to try and fix this. Sounds like you had more problems with your system then just malware. We will probably have to make a new copy of your boot.ini file that removes the command to boot into safe mode.

no sweety, the computer didn't come with a disk. The salesman said that new dells had them on the hard drive, and that they quit providing them.

Well call up that salesman and ask him what good that is now when you cannot boot your PC. Sorry I had to say that. It is a rant at the PC manufacuturers and not at you. It is a pet peave of mine. They sell you all this stuff and you pay for an OS, but they do not even provide a $0.25 disc with your OS on it. The old system recovery disk method was crap too. Who wants to restore a PC to the way the numbskulls shipped!

Have you tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration feature? Not sure if this will even work if you have a boot.ini forcing you to safe mode.

Can you borrow a Win XP SP2 (must be SP2 since that is what you have) CD from a frirend just to use it to boot to the recovery console and try to repair the boot.ini file?

Does your PC have a floppy disk drive?

The alternatives would be to do one of the below:
    1. Take the hard disk to another PC and install it as a slave. And then using the other PC, edit the boot.ini file on your hard disk to remove the text that is forcing it to boot to safe mode. Not sure if you have this ability or knowledge but it is not truly that diifficult but that depends on your abilities.
    2. Format & Reinstall - This option I don't like and since you don't have a disk to reinstall from, it may not be an option. Did they at least give you a System Recovery disk which brings you back to the same way the PC was shipped? If not there may be a hidden partition which contains a copy of you system as it was shipped. Doing this would make you loose everything done on your PC since you received it.

Thank you so much for your time and trouble. I agree with you that not providing a disc sucks.

There are a couple of folks at work that run xp, just not sure which version.

Do you think I could create a restore disk from their system, (i'm sure it's xp pro)...?

Or does it have the be the same exact os....

Thank you for being so polite. Can you please tell me where to go to donate?

Yes you really need to have the same service pack level (SP2) and the same Windows XP type (XP Media Center).
