I have a compaq presario desktop with an athlon 2600 processor, geforce fx 5200 vid card, 512gb ram, 1 hard drive, 1 cd-rom drive, windows xp, and it will not boot into windows or even show bios when I turn the power on.

I left the computer running (no really intensive programs left active, just winamp) one night and woke up to find the computer frozen at the desktop screen (unable to move the pointer/cursor and the clock on the desktop was stopped). I turned the computer off and then on, but the monitor would not show anything, it was just black. The keyboard capslock/numlock lights come on for a brief moment when the power is turned on, but then the keyboard stop responding. The cd-rom drive still ejects, but I can't tell if it reads anything. I have connected the monitor to the geforce graphics card and the onboard video. I've taken out and reinstalled all my cards. I have 2 different RAM pieces which I have tried with one, the other, and both installed. Nothing brings a response when I turn on the computer, and I have tried rebooting the computer several times.

I am wondering if it is a problem with the power supply, or maybe the motherboard. Any ideas on narrowing down the problem would be helpful, as I'm not sure what to replace or fix.

Pull everything off of this machine to the bare machine (memory only), and power back up to see if you can get it to post.

Most likely the power supply may of died. What model of Presario is it?

I switched power supplies, and still had the same problem. The model # of the presario is 24220NX. Graphics card would be the next easiest/inexpensive thing for me to replace.

If the computer will not boot, and did you strip every card off of it, except for memory?

If you did what I said, then the motherboard is dead, but if you did not, and just swapped power supplies, then you did not do what I asked you to do.

I stripped it down and couldn't get it to post.
