    Hi all,
    I have run throught the guides, and it has helped, but still booting takes serval minutes. Getting to the log on screen is okay, but onced the username and password have been entered, explorer.exe takes ages to start, longer than boilding a kettle.
    On start up there are only 2 IE pages to load.

    1. You should tidy up your desktop a little: C:\Documents and Settings\Murchg\Desktop

    2. Please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following software:

    • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix to check out a directory, remove some old symantec remains and also remnants from running smitfraud tools.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it
    (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:

    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    SymEFA

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN30.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN30.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN31.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN32.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN50.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN51.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN52.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN6A.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN6B.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\REN6C.tmp
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\N360BUOptions.ini

    DirLook::
    C:\TMP

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Norton

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\SymEFA.sys]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager]
    "BootExecute"=hex(7):61,75,74,6f,63,68,65,63,6b,20,61,75,74,6f,63,68,6b,20,2a,00,00

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Now reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    5. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Combofix

    6. Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now.

    Hello Kestral,
    I have updates the Java, Ran Combo fix (it took a while)
    It seems to be alot better now.

    Before I did run the Nrt tool, but I guess it missed some bits.

    I have tidied up the desktop a bit, will this make a difference?

    One of the start up items it designed to run in Java 6 and may have issues with the new version, so i may have to go back to the old version (work application)

    Thank you for the Help, and the reading material from a previous thread

    Your logs are clean :)

    Any slowness you are still experiencing may have to be worked out in the software forum.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
