Well, I started out having power supply issues, so I patched in an older one from a defunct emachine and ordered a new on which came in DOA.. but no worry the old power supply was working ok. That was until yesterday when I was working along then slam on the brakes Murphy goes dead. So I high tail it to the closest pc store and pick up a viable power supply come home put it in and yes, we have power, yes we have pretty lights and fans... but no boot up. the cd and dvd drives try like made... I can't tell if the hard drives are kicking in or not and the power button on the front doesn't work anymore I have to access power from the powersupply switch.

I tried the cmos battery and jumpers to no avail. I don't have an extra video card lying around and there is no video on board the motherboard.

PC was built in march of 03

    AMD /1700+1.4 athlonxp cpu
    MB VIA KT 400 KT4VL MS6712 mainboard
Radeon 9000 video card that is from the original build, 2 hard drives and a hercules-fortisimo III sound card and 512 DDRM

any ideas before I declare Murphy a toaster and start contemplating the building of Murphy V.2?

First of all, do you get any beeps when you startup?
Have you tried pressing del button, or, f2, to get into the bios ?
If you do get into it, press load failsafe, or, default settings, press f10/or, yes when asked to save changes, and exit .

Is the cpu fan working ?
Have you checked that ram is seated, by removing, and replacing- sometimes gives a better connection, as it might remove dust/fluff.

If you get beeps on startup, let us know if 1 -or, 2, or, a combination.

I get nothing, no beeps, nothing on the monitor it doesn't get that far and CPU fan is good.
I think I hear the hard drives or at least one of the whirling but the monitor is still black and no crunching noises.

No beeps can indicate a loose pci card, short circuit, or, the PC speaker or Motherboard have failed. It should not have a power problem, as you have fitted new, and fans are working, but......

You need to check all leads/connections.

This site gives you a general fault finding guide for your startup problem

But , someone else here at majorgeeks, might give you further help, so keep trying , and coming back to see if there are any more replies.

No POST beeps. Then remove all the RAM chips and re-boot. If it beeps then I'd suggest the video card might be the problem. If it doesn't then run through baklogics list of things to check.

Thanks for the help guys,I tried all that but I think my motherboard took a dump. It's time for an upgrade he was overwhelmed anyway. So I went to newegg and am building Murphy 2.7
