I cannot start my PC in Safe Mode.

First of all, why do I want to go in to Safe Mode? I want to uninstall a programme. It comes with a file that gets rid of the programme. This file will ONLY work if the computer is in Safe Mode. I have tried all other ways to get rid of the programme but it won't go. However, that is not the main issue of this thread. I have another thread on this programme. I have given this background to anticipate any questions asking why I want to get to Safe Mode.

My PC is a Hewlett Packard s5770 uk-m. My operating system is Windows 7 (64-bit) Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

I am trying to get in to Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key. However, every time I restart my PC, no matter how quickly or often I press the F8 key it restarts in Normal Mode.

At what point are you pressing the F8 key?

You should be pressing it just before the point when the windows loading screen shows up.

The problem is that's trying to second guess the computer. There's no warning when the windows loading screen is imminent. I press the F8 key continuously from the moment it shuts down until I give up when the Windows logo comes up ad I know then it's gone beyond the point when pressing F8 will work. On my other PC there's a screen that comes up and you know to press F8 from that point and it always works. With my Hewlett Packard there's no way of knowing.

Next question: What type of keyboard are you using? Is it USB or PS/2. If USB, do you have a spare PS/2 around as it may be that the drivers for the keyboard aren't loaded during the bootup sequence.

It's a USB keyboard. I don't think I have a PS/2 one. I would have to look for one. What is the next step because I think there's only a very slim chance I have a PS/2 keyboard.

From Start (in the search field) > type msconfig. Click the Boot tab. Place a check
on "Safe boot" Apply and OK out. Restart.

    Cheers..

I have still to look for a PS/2 keyboard. I might have one.

I have attempted that. When I tried to stop the process it told me that access was denied.

Can you, please, advise how to do that.

I assume that I can do a similar process to get back to Normal Mode.

Yes, msconfig> General tab, select "Normal startup" apply and ok. Restart.

    Cheers..

Thank you for your help. It has enabled me to solve two problems at once: (1) I have been able to startup in Safe Mode and because I was able to do that (2) I could get rid off my unwanted programme.

    Thanks again.
