hi - I'm working on a friend's son's computer. PC is running windows XP sp3. They told me the computer would not start up. Without an internet connection, I was able to get it to start up. I removed a number of programs via control panel, including lime wire ( i keep telling the kid not to load that). I did a clean following the read and run me first directions, logs attached to this and next message. I am still getting a microsoft authentication error - not sure if this is genuine or not. I don't have the start up discs. I have not reconnected to the internet cable yet incase nasty bug is imbedded in the start up routine. Could you please take a look at the logs and let me know if I need further cleaning / removal / modifications? Also, your thoughts on the MS authentication error.
Thanks for your help, you guys are great! View attachment ComboFix.txt

It looks like the scans took care of most of it. Let's just do this:

Use windows explorer to find and delete this ( unless you know what it is ):
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\LUIPVC

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Tell me what issues you still have.
