Got a Dell Dimension L550R, currently have 2 128 MB PC100 DIMM. Like to upgrade to more memory.

Can I use a 256 MB PC133 in combination with the 128 MB PC100. In the bios, there is no option to change the speed to 100 MHz. So will the PC133 DIMM automatically step down to 100 MHz or will it stay at 133 MHz and burn out the 100 MHz 128 MB DIMM?

go here they have an automatic scanner and it can tell you exactly what type of memory you need and can use

The PC133 will automatically under-clock and run as if it was a PC100.

I was encouraged by Mimsy. But turned out computer doesn't recognize it, even when it's the only DIMM used.

It's odd because Dell scan says I can upgrade to PC133.

Also tried Buggabear's crucial scanner. Says it can upgrade to non-ECC PC133 SDRAM.

So perhaps my PC133 is not SDRAM? The label shows the following:
    4903176 4/17/02 ID#12102SAM

The chips reads Samsung 205 K4S280832C-TC75

All memory is SDRAM, just like all cars are vehicles. ;) There is something else that's causing the memory not to work quite right.... what make and model of computer/motherboard did the Crucial scanner say you have?

Let's try this. Download CPU-Z and run it. Take a screenshot of the memory tab and attach it to your next post. That will tell us more about the memory you have installed. Also, what operating system are you in?

Running Windows 2000 Pro. Intel CA810E motherboard.

I think there is a bios upgrade at the Dell site for this model. Would that fix the problem?

Ran CPU-Z, couldn't attach the screenshot, file is too big (588kb)
    but memory tab shows
    General
    SDRAM
    256 MB
Timing (DRAM frequency and FSB RAM are greyed out), next 5 are
    CL 2.0 clocks
    2 clocks
    2 clocks
    6 clocks
    8 clocks
