PCI Simple Communication Controller problem

I recently updated from ME to XP Home with a clean install. Everything seems to be working but in Control Panel/System/Hardware, under other devices I have a yellow question mark on the PCI Simple Communication Controller. When I hit properties, it says The driver for this device is not installed. (Code 28) I tried the option for Windows to reinstall the driver several times using the Windows CD as the source and allowing it to go to the Internet with no success. I don't even know what the device is.

I am running an Athlon Thunderbird 1400 chip with a gig of ram.

Don't really know if this is a software or hardware problem and apologize if I posted it in the wrong place.

I will appreciate your help.

 

The PCI Simple Communication Controller is probably a dial up modem. If you don't need a modem to connect to the internet, you don' need to worry about this. Feel free to right click on the item on your device manager and choose disable.

If you DO use a dial up modem to connect to the internet, you will need a software driver from the modem manufacturer. Best place to start would be looking around the house to see if you have a disk with "modem drivers" written on it.

 

If you don't know what it is & the system is stable then go to the device manager. Find the problem, right click on it & disable it. Reboot.

I had something like that that was on the mother board & I never used/wanted it.

 

Thanks for the help. I have a DSL but may use the modem for faxing. I found the driver and all is well.
