PCI sound card recognition

Okay, I just reformatted my PC and went from Windows XP to Windows 7 x64. Windows 7 recognized and installed all drivers except for my sound drivers.

I've tried installing VISTA x64 drivers for my on board sound for my Asus M2N-SLI mother board with no luck. I've gone to manage devices, uninstalled the drivers and tried reinstalling them, no luck.

So I hopped over to my PCI sound card which is more ideal considering the Asus sound tends to pop/crackle. I'm trying to install a "Creative SB PCI128 (ES1371)" sound card. When I check my device manager I have an exclamation beside my "Multimedia Sound Controller". I googled my sound card, found some drivers, and downloaded them. I continue to have an unknown Sound controller.

I don't know if this is a problem with sound card drivers or motherboard and after two days I've determined I need help.

    Some hopefully helpful specs:
    OS: Windows 7
    Motherboard: Asus M2N-SLI
Sound card: Creative SB PCI128 (ES1371)

Can you tell whether that's the onboard sound controller or the PCI card? Did you connect your speakers to the PCI card? Does it work?

Have you disabled onboard sound? I believe you need to access your BIOS settings and disable onboard sound. Otherwise, Device Manager will continue to recognize both the onboard sound controller and the PCI card.

Alrighty, I've confirmed it is the PCI sound card as the missing Multimedia Controller. I disabled the onboard via bios. So device manager now has no Sound/Audio devices other then the unknown Sound Controller

I also installed Windows 7 Codecs/Shark007 Codecs. Then installed Realtek AC'97 drivers and no luck. I still have an unknown "Multimedia Audio Controller."
I'm not sure the purpose of Win 7 Codecs though.. Was there some adjustment I was suppose to make?

    Thanks, Hagg.

Yep, that isn't going to work. You need a Creative driver. Since card is apparently an old card, I don't know where you can find a driver for it for Win 7. You might try this: http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/creativelive3.html, but I can't guarantee anything.

Could you buy a new card? Do you have PCI Express on your motherboard?

I could buy a card, I'd really like to have sound within an hour or so though. I have PCI-E slots.

Do I have to have Win 7 specific drivers for the sound card to work correctly? It seems like running Vista x64 in compatibility mode would do the same thing.

I would not want to do this, even if it works. Working in compatibility mode should be only used for temporary or specific applications, not as a long-term or permanent mode of operating. I think you really need to get a new sound card.
