"PCSecure System" Virus?

My computer was recently affected by some spyware or virus that is hijacking my background and turning it into a bright red link that says "YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER!: DOWNLOAD PRIVACY PROTECTION SOFTWARE NOW!". Also it attempts to open internet explorer (which I thought I deleted) and is attempted to download and install "PCSecureSystem". It also is bringing up warnings in popups and on my toolbar for security problems acting like legitimate programs. I will post my HijackThis log as soon as I can just wondering if anybody knew this problem off the top of their heads. Thanks! :confused

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

No you should not be posting a HijackThis log as it would be removed. Please read the sticky threads.

You have a SmitFraud infection and the proper fix is not HijackThis. It is the below.

I'm going to post two sets of instructions below. Each will be enclosed in separate Quote boxes. Make sure to complete the first one 100% before moving on to the second one.

ATTACH THE FIRST LOG NOW BEFORE CONTINUING OR YOU WILL OVERWRITE IT!!!! And then immediately continue on to the below steps.

    How are things working now?

So does this mean you are not having anymore malware issues?

You really should consider following the below instructions anyway because you could have more malware hanging around.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

Read & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    Chaslang,
Well I thought everything was working fine now, the initial problem seems to be gone. There are no more pop-ups, no more active link background but now I can't access the internet (i'm on another computer atm). I assume it is because of my Windows Firewall which I tried to change however the options are greyed out to enable or disable it (it is now set to enabled). I don't know how to fix the problem, I have gone through the windows cleaning process and although that found a lot of issues it didn't solve my internet problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I think these are the ones you needed. Ran combofix, avg, and mgtest. Mgtest gave me two files, newfiles and unkey? Let me know if you need the other.

MGtools.exe did not run properly. When you ran it, did you notice any of the possible error messages mentioned on the download page and instructions for using MGtools?

Did you knowingly install Ask Toolbar?

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Kazaa 3.2.7 <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME
    Symantec Network Drivers Update

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Now delete the below folders:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Gamer\Application Data\Symantec
    C:\Program Files\Symantec
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

    Now delete the below files:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg
    C:\WINDOWS\bndsrmnf.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\bndsrpfn.dll

I was able to remove all of the programs except Kazaa and Java Runtime Environment 1.2. I tried looking for them in my files but couldnt find anything. Also after deleting those files and installing the new Java I am still getting error messages from MGtools.

    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

We will fix these manually after getting MGtools to run properly.

As stated in my previous message, see the the explanations on the download page for MGtools.

I think I've got it this time. I apologize Chaslang had I read the stickies first I'm sure this problem would have been resolved by now. Here is the MGTools log.

You never answered my question from message # 10 about Ask Toolbar. I need an answer. But if the answer is no, goto add/remove programs and uninstall it.

Let's continue anyway with other cleanup.
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Symantec Network Drivers Service
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteSNDSrvc into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Chaslang the only problem I ran into was trying to delete SNDSrvc with HJT Config, it wouldn't let me delete it saying it was a critical program. However I continued with the steps ignoring the error message and ran into no other additional problems other than some of the things you told me to delete not showing up in the HJT analyze which I figure was a good thing since they were already gone. It did look like Avenger ran into some trouble but I will let you take a look at that and tell me. Looks like it was unable to delete some files. After finishing your instructions and rebooting I went back and was able to delete SNDSrvc I then rebooted again. And now my internet is working again!! It looks like most if not all of the mal-ware/spyware is gone. Btw I didn't install askbar on purpose and went ahead and removed that from my programs. Here are the logs you requested.

The only thing that still concerns me that is my Windows Firewall is up and active and the option to enable or disable it is still greyed out. Should I be worried since my internet is now working? Let me know if there is anything else you need. I can't tell you how much trouble and money you have saved me! I appreciate the patience and help.

Use HijackThis to fix the below line. MAKE SURE you exit all browser sessions before you click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: Symantec Intrusion Prevention - {6D53EC84-6AAE-4787-AEEE-F4628F01010C} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\IDS\IPSBHO.dll (file missing)

Other than the above, your logs are clean.

The Windows firewall does not provide adequate protection anyway and this is discussed in the link in my final instructions given below. So install one of the free firewalls mentions there (like Comodo).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
