pctel driver needed

I had to restore my daughter's gateway pc due to a disk failure. When complete (xp and all apps) everything worked exept the modem. I downloded DriverGuide toolkit but all it tells me is the modem is a pctel pci modem. The Gateway site gave me the wrong driver. Does xp have a "generic" driver somewhere I can use? All attempts to install the modem have failed and the modem driver is not on the system restore cd even though gateway says it is.

I got a few CDs for that PCtel modems, some of them for different reasons are hard to install, you know what I do when I get tired of that? I buy a new one, a modem like that cost about $8.00 in my patio. Any way, what is you modem model?

 

I have had the modem out and still can't find a model number. I think I will take your advice and spring for a cheap modem. (with software).
