pdf compression?

    Hi,

I've got a question about pdf compression. My scanner automatically makes pdf files of scans and the pdf's have good functionality as they can be searched, text can be copied and pasted, text shows up in google searches, etc. However the filesizes can be quite large, up to 100mb for the bigger files.

I've got a program called Nuance pdf Creator which will compress the pdf's to a smaller filesize, but the extra functionality is also removed as a result. I want to host the pdf's online to make them available for download, but so far am having to choose between huge filesizes or minimal functionality. Will Adobe Acrobat shrink pdf's in a way that leaves the above functionality intact? Are there any other good programs that will do this?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

I can't give any insight on pdf programs and compression abilities.

Which model scanner is it--I'll take a look at the manual? Perhaps there is a setting to make a smaller file size using its own software?

All scanners have some degree of configuration, just set the scanning resolution lower in the scanning options, you may be able to configure these options in the program which you are scanning from or it allot of cases from the utility supplied by the manufacture with the driver(Installation). By the way this will now remove functionality.

The feature that is supplied by you being able to search the text from a scanned image is known as Optical character recognition which I've used before so I'm used to it.

If you need further help tell me what scanning utility you are using.

Thank you for the help, but I'm almost done scanning the relatively large stack of documents and really don't wish to re-scan them so the possibility of reducing the scanning resolution willl have to be reserved for future documents. Thanks for the idea though. What I really am looking for is some sort of compression utility that will keep the optical character recognition since that will allow copy and pasting of the text, google searches to find the documents, intra-document search, etc. The scanner is an HP Officejet J4540 All-in-One. Thanks again.

You could try another PDF converter such as PrimoPDF or doPDF; use it to "print" your existing PDFs to another PDF and see whether the functionality remains or was removed.
