I would like a handheld unit, inexpensive, to read pdf or other word files. Ability to reach the Internet is a plus, wifi, but not needed. Anyone have a few ideas?

    Hi

    How much is inexpensive?

Many Smartphones can do this, my HTC HD2 can open PDF and most Office Docs (Word, Outlook, Powerpoint and Excel), or a netbook, small enough to carry around.

Best thoughts so far without a budget to work with.

    Hi

Think for that sort of money you'll need to surf the 2nd hand markets or ebay etc for a Windows Mobile 6 or 6.5 smartphone, likely wont be many in that price bracket.

Could look for a really cheap or 2nd hand small laptop or netbook, something around 10" screen is portable enough.

    Doesn't the Kindle read PDFs?

Yes it does read PDF but not MS Word and is near $260

Can convert files to a Kindle recognised format using info HERE

My bad. I missed the MS Word requirement in the first post. Ops.

Piffle it happens, you like me are well versed in the hardware needed for the OP but for me its well outside the pricerange mentioned, dunno if you have alternates Mims?

At that budget... I don't know. Maybe a used smart phone or PDA, or a used Kindle and skip the MS Word requirement. Alternatively, start reading Woot on a daily basis.

If the OP's handy with electronics and already owns a hand held console, preferably PSP, I can think of a couple options, but I'm not sure how well it would go over if I start suggesting to people they mod their consoles... probably not very well? :innocent
