All of a sudden I am missing the speaker icon from the task bar. Sound is still working. I am running windows 7. I have gone to the control panel and clicked notification area, then customize. I checked the box that says "Always show all icons..." Nothing. When I click on "turn system icons on or off" the drop box for the speaker volume says off but it is grayed out and doesn't let me click on it to choose on. This may have happened after a recent update but I am not sure.

    Thanks for any help.

Right click the toolbar. Go to Properties. In Notification Area click Customize.

See if it is hidden or showing in there.

    Does your sound work?

Right Click on Computer and click Manage.

Then go to Device Manager. Under Sound does it list anything?

Also is there any device with a question mark or Yellow Exclamation mark?

I had this happen to me last month but I don't remember the solution. I think it may have been as simple as changing the volume once reinstated the icon but I am not sure. [If the below doesn't work try Start>Control Panel>Sounds>highlight the sound device and select Properties>Levels tab>change the master volume control a bit and then close the windows and see if the icon reappears after a rebbot]

Looking around try Start and type in the Search box Speaker Volume adn hit enter. In the window that opens, see if you can turn on the icon for speakers.

The sound does work. The volume control on the keyboard does not work. I have to open up sound in control panel to raise or lower the volume. The problem is with my office computer so I will try your suggestion Monday morning.

Anyone else plese feel free to make suggestions too so I have other options come Monday. Thank.

When I look in device manager it lists "high definition audio device". Nothing has a exclamation mark or ? in it.

Here is a picture of what I see with the speaker not being able to be turned on. Again, I do hear sound but can't raise or lower volume from the keyboard.
