ok quick question I just finished setting up my system and when I check my task maneger it says I have only 1 processer. also under System - Device Manager it says I have a uniprocessor. From what I have read and understand. a Pent D should act like 2? corect. any input on this is great thank you.

    Have a Look here:

As far as I know & from my experiance the proper way to install the correct Hal is Via fresh install of windows, is pretty much spelled out in my link above.

You can try within Windows, right click on uniprocessor & update driver select choose from list, if the choice you want isnt there you'll have to reinstall, options/choices in the above link.
I've had failed reboot's after changing Hal from within windows so I always select when installing windows.

One note, when selecting during windows install to see all choices use the up/down arrow keys.

If you don't want to format (if that's what you meant), a repair should help.

It certainly wouldn't hurt if you don't want to start again.

If you're going to try a repair, and a prior poster is right that it couldn't hurt, it sometimes helps to go into device manager and uninstall absolutely everything including HDDs, video, floppy, opticals, even the USBs.

Remember, the bios has enough basic drivers to fire the vga video, run the floppy and cdrom and find and run the hdd. That's what happens on a clean install anyway.

Again, no promises, it just can't hurt to try.

Oh dear god, please nobody try this. Out of the 10 or so times I've seen it, it hosed the system ~70% of the time. But it CAN work, if you like gambling.

Why? The enum keys in the registry get deleted during a repair install. Thats better/more effective than removing devices from Device Manager, which usually doesn't always delete the enum keys.

Also, a repair install will replace the HAL with the correct version. The thing is, what HAL are you expecting? A multiprocessor HAL? That won't be happening, unless its XP Pro.

@ the original poster: What OS version are you using?

Are you sure you installed your motherboard drivers, especially the chipset drivers from the cd that came with the mobo?

Might be worth going to the motherboard manufacturer's web site and getting updated ones if available.

The thing that's troubling me is that since this happened, there's no guarantee it will work right the next time. If updated mobo drivers installed don't do it, this may be a time when a bios flash is in order.

    Very good :)

Original poster, are you sure your motherboard also supports this processor? What motherboard make and model do you have?

Sorry, I missed this part. I thought your point about Pro was so good and jumped off this...

I "think" newer Pentium 4's with hyperthreading processors or the Pentium D Dual-Core Processors both, with pro, use the ACPI Multiprocessor PC HAL.

It sounds as if maybe (I expect that) she has the ACPI uniprocessor PC HAL. I would like to know, though.

  12. techsalong

    techsalong Guest

In device manager, under "computers," what version of HAL do you have? Is it something like "ACPI uniprocessor PC?"

The question another poster asked about which version of Windows you have is still really important too....

Well, barring technical stuff, what we can do is break it down.

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/announcement.php?f=22

Read this, and post your specs. Make certain you give us the OS version and service pack level.

Until then, we can only make semi-educated guesses. We don't even know what hardware and software you actually have.

From there, we can determine if a Repair or new install is in order.

Say you have an onboard sound device and you install an upgrade pci sound card. Disable the onboard with device mgr and then check it in setup. It's now disabled.

Disable the IEEE 1394 device in device mgr and check it in cmos. I don't mean uninstall, that's software. I mean disable, of course.

You can uninstall drivers and update drivers to do a lot of things in device mgr and I agree that it will write to the registry.

The windows installation disk can't write to the cmos. Some devices "may" stick. As I said, maybe because I'd just feel better. I'd like to clear it.

The bios does the plug and play of all of the Core Hardware during the POST before the cdrom ever begins to boot that install disk. That's with an empty hard disk and no windows in sight yet.

The bios sees the processor too.

Another common gui for the cmos is the real time clock in the tray. Double click it and reset the cmos.

The default and correct way for a cmos setting is to enable the bios plug and play, and tell the cmos that no, you don't have a plug and play operating system.

Well, I've deleted the irrelevant nonsense in the post (by all parties), and I'll leave your thread, but disagree entirely with your theory of it being a gui for CMOS.

I'm not going to discuss it further here though, because its irrelevant to the issue at hand.

    Everyone stay on topic please.

I'm actually embarassed to post in this tread, with the info I have read above....... and more embarrased that this info is associated with majorgeeks!!

Reset CMOS via System tray clock... please enlighten me, how that actually resets the Bios data?

Post 13 was the viable option.. we dont know any basic system info..... and with what looks like a system rebuilt, it nearly always needs a complete re-install, trying to fudge/fix a complete hardware change on a already installed OS on a HD, with older hardware drivers is as Adryn said earlier a receipe for disaster.

ok I double and triple checked everything before I bought but here we go.

the HAL = ACPI Uniprocessor x64 based PC

the motherboard is the Gigabyte Ga-8N-SLI Royal.
according the gigabyte webpage it supports my proccessor.
the processor is the Pentium D 830 3ghz.

also I am using windows xp pro x64. yes 64, I do more work then play so 64 is better for me. and so far havn't had any problems with it driver wise or program wise.

only thing I can think of is I may need to upgrade my BIOS. but I first need to check which version I have.

I have installed all drivers I could I installed inthis order

Windows > Mobo Drivers > Video Card.

if you need more information or whatever

MSN = Eilelwen@Hotmail.com and just Eilelwen for AIM

well for some bloody reason it won't let me edit my last post so here goes the added information.

I can't figure out what BIOS I have, whatever shipped with my Mobo.

    also its SP1 on windows.

ok now I have a new issue and I'm just gonna add it to the end of this one sence its related. After I updated the bios and I got the multiprocessor working. I started locking up.... I'm gonna post my DxDiag info. I reinstalled windows, updated my drivers. No effect it happens when I'm playing games and sometimes just randomly, with games it happens very very quickly usually just after loading.

Only to happen after updating the BIOS, and getting both cores to work in the OS...

    Hmmm...

Is there a way to disable a core in the BIOS?

Maybe you can test it in that manner to see if its related.

as far as I can tell no, I can't disable a core. I double checked my BIOS settings and I did turn of hyperthreading sence I din't support that, but that hasn't helped at all.

a thought I just had, I have a 500w Power supply. is it possible that once I got the duel core working that I started to pull more power? and now I'm exceeding my 500w supply. I'm only running the gefocrce 6800, 2 sata HDs, the mobo and 6 fans.

I think though I will probably be calling tech support, but not sure where this problem is related. I'm gonna bet windows though.

I've been gone and I'm happy to see that there's been progress and additional info.

In post 9 I hinted toward a bios flash but didn't have enough info. I always flash the bios if the board didn't ship with the latest stable version.

About that clock thing, you asked "please enlighten." No need to be embarassed at all. Let's be on the same page. I don't want to confuse the system clock (clock cycles in MHZ) with the real time clock. (correct terms.) The real time clock gives the date and time of day, and can be accessed in the windows tray, lower right of screen. It is set in the cmos but can also be set by double-clicking the time of day in the tray and bringing up the gui which will allow the day, year, time, etc. to be changed.

When this gui is used, it changes the time in the cmos. Converserly, entering setup and changing any of that data there will cause it to change in the windows tray, lower right of screen, also.

That is using a windows gui to change settings in the cmos, as can be done by disabling devices in device manager.

    Hope that helps.

Funny thing is I'm not embarrased at all what made you thing that? ( I was more embarrased at the mass incoherent posts I read.. and I read the deleted ones as well )

I wanted to know how and in your original post....

that resets CMOS, your post implied that it reset the whole CMOS data back to default, which it wouldnt do... yes noted that you have now clarifed your statement that it only changes the date/time.

    Nope, it doesn't.

Firstly, it's called systray. You could have saved three sentences by using the correct terminology.

There is NO Windows tray, seeing as you like trying to be technical.

As far as the rest, I could go on, but I stopped reading at the Device Manager GUI bit. :)

Did you reset the BIOS via the CMOS reset jumper after flashing? I know its cleared up wierdness like this for me in the past. Can't hurt to give it a shot.

    No.

Intel has licensed out AMDs 64 bit extensions and currently uses them in the new P4s. Windows XP x64 works fine with Intel.

Agreed, I have noticed the same in the past, especially on Gigabyte mobos...

also as you are playing games and it happens mostly with those.. are they 64 bit compatible? some newer games do have 64bit patches available to allow them to work ok with Win64.

well I reset my CMOS. That din't help. its getting frustrating as the lockups are random. even though running games gaurentees a crash. a crash in just normal windows while running windows and normal applications such as IE and once start > run. I am "faily" certain its my duel core and I'm about to set it back to the way it was but thats really not the best option.

Is it rebooting or giving a stop error?

    Because we can debug those.

there is no error no nothing just a complete system halt. requiring a hard restart.

I can repeat the lockup easily in DxDiag without running a game, usually while using the video test part. I have upgraded my nvidia drivers to the latest version but do you guys know if there is a version that could be better then the newest out.

ok quick question on the geforce site I found a driver that says its the nforce 4 driver and there is a windows 64 one avaible but on the gigabyte website theres only supports windows xp, can I use this driver? or is it not the same thing?

ok in the system subcategory I found a few things, several are by a source from DCOM another from Side By Side. have no idea what these do and I don't really see any other ones.

and in the application I have a few from winmgmt, and windows product activation.
