This is a phrase I hear many people use incorrectly.

"So I only have this much money, per se I spend $100 on tires"

Yes used in place of "Let's say"

It annoys me, the meaning is more along the lines of... "I have to spend money on my car, not on tires per se, but on several things"

I realise my examples aren't great, I guess it kind of means the same as "Not exactly" when used in the correct context.

 

That Is funny. I've never heard it used that way.

I haven't looked it up and never really thought about it, but I think the negative part, "not", isn't part of the meaning.
It's just that it's nearly always used as, "something is not something, per se".

 

Strangely enough, I just use the term "per se" to mean "in itself", which is the correct meaning of the term, anyway. (e.g. "My gun collection is not an armory, per se, but it is getting huge." ~ Fred, are you listening?:-D)
