I'm operating on Windows 7 and recently started having system issues. Making it quick, after system is start up the Performance Options Dialog box appears.
    (snipping included)
I've troubleshot to find out that maybe its a problem with the AFS, so I tried the option of:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Type CMD.exe
    3. Right click the command Prompt.
4: click on Run as Administrator.
    5. Type in the command: sc config afs start= disabled

After following this troubleshoot, my system gave me a error message stating that this file didn't exist.

I also tried an option of:
    1. Starting up PC in Safe Mode w/command prompt
    2. Change directory up to c:\(>cd c:\). I didn't see this option and computer went into recovery mode and then crashed.

In the Performance Options Box other forums included that the Virtual Memory needed to be adjusted. At start up it continually returns to "No paging file".

    Hopefully, Ive included enough information.

    Hi

Was this an upgrade install of Windows 7 or a clean install?
If not new install of Windows 7, what had you installed or changed before this happened?

Possible fix is in part what you have done already but with a slight change, so boot so Safe Mode and with a cmd prompt type

    del /a:h pagefile.sys

    Then once finished type

    chkdsk /f

and then reboot and if you get a checkdisk messages on boot follow the instructions, and see how you get on.If then ok on boot goto Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced > Performance Settings and make sure Windows is managing pagefile.

If the above does not work then you could try:

Press F8 at boot time, then boot the machine into Repair Mode. Now use this sequence of commands:
    path %path%;c:\Windows\System32
    takeown /f c:\pagefile.sys /a
    cacls c:\pagefile.sys /g everyone:F
    attrib -s -h -r c:\pagefile.sys
    del c:\pagefile.sys

Note that the drive letter could be something other than C:. However, it cannot be X:

Thanks for your response. This is an original install of Windows 7. No upgrades or changes before problems.

I wasn't able to enter the commands in Safe mode with command prompts. For some reason it never gave me the option to enter anything. I will try it again to see if I missed something.

    DavidGP and theefool,

Thanks for your help. I was also having a problem with my laptop overheating. When attempting to run checkdsk my computer would shut down a quarter ways through. I believe that this was due to the system heating. I d a partial fix to this solution and it allowed the system to enter in to safe mode w/command prompt without shutting down.
    I followed the solution of:
    1. cd c:\
    2. dir /a:h
    3. del /a:h pagefile.sys
    4. chckdsk /f (yes run next boot up)

After restarting the dialog box is not present and system is page-filing on its on.
