The test was carried out by Antony Petrakis aka Virus-P of www.virus.gr on 48 AV and AT applications that had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and were tested using their full scanning capabilities, such as heuristics, full scan etc.

58306 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, RAV, Nod32, Dr Web and McAfee. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that at least 2 antivirus programs detected it as a new virus. All virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept packed were the ones packed using external-dos packers (WinZip and WinRar). The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program and were unique according to the checksum32 filesize.

    true...

Chances are that is true but why is that they releases this test and still claim that they are the best? Thats just stupid.

1 important question....does it come with a firewall???

a/v and firewall are two seperate programs. the best firewall may be made by a company that doesnt even make a/v programs.

crap. I use panda's built in firewall (yes it's also an anti-virus) But i dont really know if it works or not. but looking at your post about the best anti-virus and the tests and stuff like that im guessing that it reall reall sucks. right?

you have to find whats best for you. there are people that think F-Secure is too intrusive and adds too many processes to the computer. The question you have to ask is "Have I ever gotten a virus? Does the program I have work?" If the answer is yes, then the program doesnt suck for you.

    Oh boy .

If you really want to form your own opinion about Antony Petrakis (aka Virus-P) and his test/s....then read the whole thread here.
Then read the follow up to that thread here. He is a VXer (virus trader), not a _virus tester_.

I used to have norton but that is a program that I no longer use to many reasons why.

I use panda now and I have nothing but good things to say about it for the 2003 version

    But for the 2004 version.

I just upgraded to the 2004 version which came with me paying again for another year of virus definitions. I do not know if its any better but I know for sure it uses more resources it added another process to my computer called webproxy. it takes about 15 megs of ram and I still dont know exactly what it does. I suspect it connects to a panda server for what I don't know. I am not to happy with that but till I find out for sure I will not knock it down.

If anybody knows let me know

Sure there is no any good antivirus software in this world. I have never seen any good antivirus. And Iam trying not use any antiviruses, 'cause thats make my PCs run slowly and finally I've got crashed my workstations. But ...I need AV just for make sure that everything is 'protected'. I know some 'best' AV.. such as NAV, AVK McAfee... and tried all of them..
I cannot tell you which one the best, but I use the eXtendia AVK Client/Server with double engine solutions, and I turned off the second engine, just because it makes my PCs goes down..., but sometimes (once a week) I turning back the second engine and chech my PCs.. unfortunately this is not for free and not the chipest one ... but.. I use that.. I just want to share my opinion about AV.. please if you have any other opinion just share it with me.. I also want to know about AV and eXtendia AVK Pro ( http://www.extendia.com )

    Re: :)

I believe that the very best antivirus is not software, but your head. If you are responsible and honest and knowledgeable, then the probability of a virus infection is next to none. Of course, there is that slight possible chance, but that's where avg comes in;)

seriously, my vote for best av software is your own head.

    Re: :)

Very well said Strogg! Wandering the web/net is like taking a walk down any big city street; you will get many "offers that seem too good to be true." They are.
And they come with a price -- viruses and worms and trojans, Oh My! Don't take the offers. Don't fall for the cons.
And always check the exits before you sit down in that sleezy bar.
A good security set up is a comfort (like a 120,000 volt, 350 amp stun gun in your hip pocket) but, as always, not walking down that back alley at midnight is a better way of avoiding getting mugged.

I love Anti virus personal edition, for two reasons

    1. its free.
    2. It works way the hell better then Norton.

AVPE matched up with ZAPro and my system is secure and virus free. :)

Well this is my experience, as shallow as that may be. I bought McAfee Pro 6.0 back when I first started trying to learn about the net. Didn't go to porn or casinos or anything that usually casues one to find a virus. Was always having some sort of trouble with the program. I did get a virus and quit using it all together. I lost that pc because I didn't have the money to place it in a repair shop, and not enough experience to fix it myself, still not sure if I have enough experience to fix them, but I am trying. Anyway, stayed away from the net for years. Now I have great need of the net and AV to keep this newer pc safe. Too much investment to lose to a hijacker or virus. And not that I have a whole lot of money invested in the pc, probably about as much in software now. But what gets me is this. I placed Norton 03 on this new pc, when it was new anyway. And I kept it updated along with all XP updates and ZA firewall, thought I was safe from the nasties on the net. My step daughter used my pc and I noticed that it wasn't running like it should, I tried to remove any varmits with Norton, and it never showed anything at all. I searched different forums trying to find an anserw, but didn't see anything I felt was the problem. And I am new to this so maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places. I did get a response from a msn forum and it sugested I download SpyBot, I did and that seem to help some what, But I still felt something wasn't right when my settings for ZAlarm ended up changed several times, and Auto Protect in Norton was disabled. My step daughter is 11 yrs old, and I know she did not go into any porn or casino sites. At least I am sure believeing that she didn't, maybe I am being fooled on that end, but I doubt it. So then I find this site and download AntiVir and run it and it finds my problems, at least part of it anyway. It showed two trojans, one worm, and one other virus. But what gets me is I paid good money for Norton, I paid good money for McAfee earlier as well. Now I download a free version and it finds what they didn't. That's not right ! To my logic anyway, if we pay for protection in these programs, it should be the best we can have. Not that one version of Norton or McAfee or any other should give better protection than a different version of the same product. If we pay for the service it should be worthy of our efforts to protect our pc's regardless. Norton 03 should not be any different than Norton 05 if you keep the updates going continuously. I am sorry but that's just wrong and that's all there is to it. I am not happy about this. But what can we do about it in the end, very little, complain I guess but that most likely will not help. Just like Microsoft, you'd think they would be trying to do a better job of closing all the holes in it. But that's just my opinion. I couldn't help giving it when I read these threads. CT

How many answers do you want before you actually do the work try an AV and see how it works for you? If it matters-- and it does not because YMMV-- I use Avast Home edition. Frequent updates. Good catch rate (no viruses so far after two years). Easy to understand interface. Good Proggie.
