permissions problem

    A few things I can't do:

Run vbscripts. I get a could not locate automation class named "wscript.shell" error.

Open msconfig. I get an access denied error.

Edit registry permissions. I can't even do it in safe mode logged in as admin.

Lower RAM usage in cacheman on system processes, but I can lower them on user processes.

    I'm there's some other things I can't do, I just haven't noticed.

I really don't want to have to reinstall again. I've tried djlizards repair permissions but that didn't work. I'm 99% certain this has something to do with some setting I entered into nLite 1.2.1 but I am not exactly sure which one it was. If I have to reinstall I will, but if anyone has a better idea let me know. I downloaded secedit and will tool around with that, but I am not confident I know the proper form to use it, so if someone has used it to reset permissions could they post what options they used?

When did this start? Do you have a firewall, if so, which one?

An excellent program to troubleshoot/solve issues is dial-a-fix (which comes with secedit).

Using this program may help ye in your situation.

Well, it's not because of a firewall. Unless it's because of windows built in firewall, but I removed that with nlite. I'm quite sure it's something I did with nlite, I posted over in their forum and I hope they can tell me which setting it was that did it.

That dial-a-fix program seemed to be promising but didn't fix it. I also tried djlizards repair permissions program but that didn't work. I tried using secedit with a database file from my other XP install that works correctly but that didn't work.

The only thing I haven't tried is manually editing the hive permissions, although this is going to be difficult because as I said I can't edit permission, well, I can, it just acts stupid. I can't edit them directly, but if I remove a user then recreate the user then I can edit permissions.

I'm at the point where I think the only recourse is to do a full reinstall. But I'm buying a new video card as soon as it's released so I'll wait till then.

    Which one?

Also, did you try changing permissions using the administrator account, via safemode?

The x1950 pro agp :D That should extend the life of my system by at least a year, 478 ain't dead yet.

Change permissions of what? I think you're referring to the registry, hmmm... I just had an idea, because when I delete the user account and then recreate it I can then edit permissions. If I was delete all user accounts, and then recreate them then I shouldn't have a problem? Only problem with this senario is how would I log onto my computer with no user accounts? I'm thinking maybe create a temporary administrator account? I'll ponder this for a bit, if anyone has any other ideas or better way to accomplish what i think is the problem let me know ;) Then again, tooling around a little bit just now I think I was on to something with altering the hive permissions. I unticked "inherit from parent blah blah" in the permissions advanced menu and it appears I can now edit registry permissions OK, just still have the other problems.
