Daughter's computer has massive issues. Can't run anything to post a HJT log. Here's the story:

Downloaded spybot, ewido, microsoft antivirus: has Avast antivirus + Adaware. After running scans in normal mode still had problems. Tried running in safe mode.

In the middle of an avast scan her PC, not the speakers, started beeping constantly-programs were frozen and couldn't get out of them. Manual restarted, couldn't select safe mode because keyboard & mouse became inoperable. Normal mode same story. Tried to boot off a windows xp cd - no dice. Tried bios settings to boot from the cd-rom first, the delete key will work to get into the bios, yet the arrow keys will not work for selection.

Keyboard and mouse are NOT USB compatible hardware.

    What now?

Why can''t you boot from the Windows CD? What happens? Booting the Windows CD will not boot your PC in a normal operation mode but should allow you to do things like reinstall, boot to recover console, windows repair. Or are you saying the boot order is wrong and you cannot boot to the CD because of this?

Did you turn off numlock when using arrows? Most key boards have two sets of arrows. Are you sure the arrow keys are how you move around?

What are you trying to tell us here? Is this a fact that you are telling us? Or is it an error message?

This is way outside of a malware problem. I'm moving you into the Software Forum. Sounds like your BIOS could even be corrupted.

I know what booting off of an OS cd will do. It should not be my boot order unless the malware corrupted that, as I ALWAYS have it set to that boot order for reasons such as this. It simply skips that option to go straight to the startup options menu in which case it's locked on normal mode because i can't select safe with my keyboard.

My number lock was on, still nothing. When it takes me to the login screen I can't press enter or anything of the sort. I can't use ANY arrows. When I mentioned that my keyboard and mouse are not usb compatible the point behind that was because if it's gotten to my motherboard that could be why they are inoperable.

All of this started from LOADS of malware that suddenly started eating my computer from the inside out within minutes and I'm not entirely sure how I got it as I never get malware on my computer.

I'm pretty sure that your number lock needs to be OFF to navigate with the arrows.

I hope it gets fixed soon.

No it doesn't, at least on my computer.

Try other keys like Page Up and Page Down, or Tab, or see if there are other options listed at the bottom of the screen.

To start the computer in Safe mode, follow these steps:
    1. Print these instructions before you go to step 2. They will not be available after you shut down the computer in step 2.
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Use the F8 key. On a computer that is configured to start to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when you see the Startup menu.
    4. Use the arrow keys to select a Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

Note NUM LOCK functionality must be turned off for the arrow keys on the numeric keypad to work.

    5. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, use the arrow keys to select the installation that you want to access, and then press ENTER.

These instructions were found at http://support.microsoft.com

Thanks for the suggestions...but the keyboard functions really do not work.

This sounds like a hardware issue rather than a software one, because the computer started beeping in the middle of a software process. Is the computer operable now that it has had time to cool down ( an assumption on my part )?

Insomniac and chaslang feel free to join in and help!:)

As I said earlier it sounds to me like the BIOS is corrupted right now. It may need to be reset. There may be a jumper on the motherboard for doing this. Without the ability of using the keyboard it is difficult to do anything, so a reset of the BIOS maybe the next thing to try.

Anyone else care to comment on that....please do so. I'm not into playing with the hardware end of PCs too much anymore.

I'm not a pro at this stuff, but I wanted to try helping. After 4 hours on Microsoft's support forum chaslang is probably on the right track.

There's a virus that can corrupt BIOS (you said lots of crap got on your computer), and a MS update that can mess up BIOS.

And (just in case it was overlooked) checking all wire connections. I hope that it gets fixed, sorry I couldn't help more.

    Good Luck!!
