Persistant little bugger ...

About 3 days ago I tried to watch a video. I was prompted to install an activex control to see the video. Of course I clicked "Yes". It started downloading and installing stuff (without further prompting, if I remember correctly) and still the video wouldnt play. Uh oh, I said to myself, I might not should've done that (I use poor english when I'm talking to myself).

    Symptoms:
about:blank is set as my homepage.
I have this little shield icon in my taskbar. It flashes from a red shield with an X in it to a blue shield with a ? in it. Clicking on it (I thought it was Windows Security Center) brings up a webpage "http://www.virprotect.com/?aff=1012". Periodically this shield icon will have a ballon stating my computer is infected with spyware.

Everything else SEEMS to be ok.

I have followed the instructions here:http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313

On the AVG report it shows 2 or 3 entries as "Ignored". Originially I had set these to "Ignore" as I thought they were part of Spysweeper. After looking and thinking about it I decided to go ahead and quarantine them.

I wont be able to reply until later this afternoom (4pm est), and probably wont be able to follow any instructions until Thurdsay (1-10-08) morning. Working night shift really stinks .

I look forward to any insights into this problem.

I don't see any anti-virus program in your logs ....
You also have HJT running at startup and it is improperly installed!

There is no HJT log in the MGLogs.zip...did you stop the scan before it was finished?

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)"
    Viewpoint Media Player

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

I have AVG as my anti-virus program. Unsure why it didnt show up in the logs. Guess it was turned off.

I thought I let MGTools run until completion, I got a "Press any key to close the command window" message.

I took a screen capture of MGTools at completion and posted it with the other logs, in case I am doing something wrong, you can see what I'm seeing.

Thanks for the help so far. It looks like the shield icon in my system tray is gone.

EDIT - the screen capture is too big to add.

The only thing that worked was the Reg. fix.....there still is no HJT log and the avenger fix did not run properly.

Please use windows explorer to find and delete:
    Files to delete:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Security Guide.url
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Security Troubleshooting.url
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\fsehfcu.dll

    Folders to delete:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Security Guide.url
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Security Troubleshooting.url

Then double click on C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. It will produce a log ---> attach that.

The XP Cleaning instruction sticky instructed me to pu MGTools in the drive where windows is located, in my case thats D:\ . I had been running it from D:\. I copied it over to C:\ and ran it as you requested, there is a HJT log this time.

    I manually deleted:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Security Guide.url
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Security Troubleshooting.url
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.exe
    D:\WINDOWS\system32\fsehfcu.dll

    There were no folders named:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Security Guide.url
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Security Troubleshooting.url

I double checked and made sure I had hidden files enabled (Tools-folderoptions-view-clicked the show hidden files & folders) and I still didnt see any folders with the names you specified.

    Your logs look clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
    * How to Protect yourself from malware!
