Persistent ZeroAccess(?)

I first noticed something weird was going on when my computer was acting unnecessary slow and I saw the process Xsecva.exe taking up a lot of resources in the task manager. With some research I found out I had the ZeroAccess rootkit.

I followed the advice here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

I seemingly removed everything, the Xsecva.exe process stopped and my computer is working smoothly again. BUT when I run the RogueKiller again I get the flashing ZeroAccess and it finds a few items still in the registry. Am I still infected? I've included all the logs mentioned in the malware removal post here.

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Files/folders tab and locate these detections:

    • [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : C:\Windows\Assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini --> FOUND

Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Now re-run RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Then please attach the log from running MGTools --- C:\MGLogs.zip.

    Thanks for the reply.

Update: I messed around more with RK before you had replied and I hadn't even notice the results had tabs. I deleted the stuff in "Files" and now I no longer get the flashing ZA icon, and none of the other programs seem to find any infections either.

However today when I rebooted my computer it turned UAC automatically on, which I always keep off. This is suspicious right? So I ran RK again and it finds some stuff in the registry, but nothing in the Files tab, no desktop.ini. I have included the logs of it here (after fixing and an after a re-scan). I also included the log MGTools, I was running it the wrong way before.

    Extract bfe.reg to your desktop.
Double-click BFE.reg and allow it to merge into the registry. If you get a "successfully merged into registry" type of message, reboot your PC and see if you can turn on BFE, or if it is already turned on.

You can run these commands from the command prompt.

    • net start bfe
    • sc qc bfe

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I did the registry thing and after a restart I saw Base Filtering Engine already running in the services. When I entered "net start bfe" in cmd it said "System error 5 has occurred. Access Denied.". The other command produced some stuff, I dunno how to copypaste from command prompt. It said among other stuff: "START_TYPE : 2 AUTO_START" so I guess it is running.

When I tried to run the GetLogs.bat it gave me two windows popup messages in the middle of it:

"SteelWerx WhoAmI application has stopped working" and "ProcessDll.exe - Common language runtime begugging services - Application has generated an exception that could not be handled."

After those it kept going. I attached the logs in here.

System works fine other than it keeps turning UAC off which is annoying and because of that Ati Tray Tools won't load and I have to restart again.

Update: My windows Firewall is not working. It won't load and when I try to configure it it just gives me an error message "There was an error opening..". Seriously considering just doing a clean install at this point.

    Looks good.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

It's been brought to my attention that your BITS service may not be running. Do this:

Download the below to your dektop.

    BITS.reg

    • Now please click Start, and type regedit into the search box.
    • You should see a regedit.exe and icon appear in the Programs area of the Start Menu.
    • Right click on regedit.exe and select Run As Administrator
    • Then in the Registry Editor menu click File and select Import.
    • Navigate to the BITS.reg file saved to your Desktop and double click it. Allow it to be added to the registry.

    Reboot.
    Is Windows Update now okay?

Good to know. We have experienced a lot of trouble with this virus in replacing that service. ;)

There was some other stuff I had to fiddle around with. My SSD went back to IDE and I had to go to my BIOS and set to AHCI again. Also the USB port I had overclocked to 500hz died and I had to unplug and replug my mouse and overclock it again. Just for future reference, other than that everything is working. Thanks again.
