Hello! My mom's laptop is infected with Personal Antivirus. I followed the instructions on "READ AND RUN ME FIRST," and have attached logs below. However, I'm not too computer savvy, so if someone could review the logs and let me know if any further action is necessary, I would appreciate it. Thank you!

You are way out of date with your MBAM updates. Now run Malwarebytes and click the Update tab. Then click the Check for Updates button so you update to the current version of the program and database. Then run a new scan with it too. Attach the new log.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Ask Toolbar
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALuNotify.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Malwarebytes log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate your help.

I don't know why MBAM was out of date--I'd just downloaded it the day I ran the scan!

Completed all of the above with only one issue: The third line ("O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALuNotify.exe") in Hijack This wasn't there, but I "fixed" the other two. 3 logs are attached.

I have another question--my parents installed Kaspersky AV after the infection with PAV, but it looks like it wasn't completely successful--it keeps saying that some components cannot be enabled. It also says that her computer has over 1600 trojans on the main screen, but they don't show up in a scan. Should I uninstall KAV and install another one? Thanks again!

    You're welcome.
Because as stated in the READ & RUN ME, you need to update the definitions as soon as installing to get the current versions. You were more than 200 out of date. And then a new program version came out too just after you downloaded and installed. Now you are current.

    Your logs are clean.

Uninstall Kaspersky, Reboot, and then reinstall.

If Kaspersky is still finding problems after the reinstall, attach a log. If it is only finding things in System Volume Information, that is System Restore and not a problem since we will remove them when we get to final instructions.

Thanks so much for your help!

Reinstalled Kaspersky, ran a full scan, and it's clean. Anything else I should do? Thanks again!
