Tonight I went to the gym I joined last night. I went to the pool area, to swim a few laps, to start off my own personal Mission: Impossible. I'm going to get into a much healthier life-style, lose the extra weight I've gained since getting married less than a year ago, and most important of all, I will have more energy, sleep better, and have less back and shoulder pain.

I've tried several times, and always given up after a week or two, so this time I splurged on a gym membership, enlisted The Guy as support system and workout partner, so I will have moral support when I want to give up.

But tonight it was just me and the pool, and after two laps my arms were sore. My technique isn't the best, but I figured that as long as I kept moving it would do some good, so I looked at the time, and set out to paddle back and forth in the pool, lap after lap. Half an hour later I just couldn't go any further, so I went and sat in the hot tub for five minutes, then showered and went home, feeling very good about myself.

My first actual workout in longer than I can remember (the panic slim-down before the wedding does not count), and no one was there to push me to keep going when I wanted to give up and go home because I started to get tired. No trainer, no workout buddy, no class, just me, and for once I kept going anyway. I did it all by myself, and I am very proud of me. :)

Be careful Mimsey if you try to do too much at the early stages you will get a lot of pain.

swimming is one of the best for muscle tone because you use a whole range of muscles but your body will tell you when to stop if you go trough the pain barrier (like military training) you will pay the price the next couple of days and that will decrease your motivation, take it easy in the beginning and build up your stamina.

it's the same when using the workout machines it's better to do 10 reps at a lower weight than at your maximum if you do heavy reps you will get a lot of muscle in place of stamina and weight loss.

I am just recovering after a serious accident and am also working to get my stamina back but there are no short cuts.

    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

I am in pain already! :(

I'm going to make an appointment with one of their trainers next time I go in there. I'm thinking that a few sessions with a trainer will help me get on the right track and get give me some direction and a more specific plan of attack than what I have right now.

For now though, I'm basking in the glory of being physically tired, not just mentally and emotionally. :)

Bill McC is right - just go easy at the first and you will be amazed at how quickly you can increase your levels. Don't hurt yourself at the beginning - your body isn't used to that kind of punishment (yet).

At Bill McC --------------- where'd you find that pic of AbbySue?????

    At AS.............................j/k dollface.

Congrats Mimsy one of the best things you can do for your self. At the risk of sounding like a parrot here, do take it slow, pain and burn out is one of the reasons people choose to stop.
One of my daughters is a personal trainer also physical therapist and she tells me to do 10 min, I believe she thinks I'm more puny then I actually am.:D I do 30 on a treadmill, supposed to be twice a day.
I had lung surgery and the doctor would not even discuss the surgery until I was doing 30 min twice a day. I thought, dang if I could do that I wouldn't need the surgery. It paid off though.
Good luck to you and take it slow :wave

I went swimming again today, for 20 minutes. I wanted to go longer, but I intellectually know that regardless of what I want to do, you are all right that I need to take it slow in the beginning. not doing that is what has stopped me every time I have tried to start a regular exercise regime in the past. That, and my shoulders started hurting in the bad way. There is good hurting, soreness from the workout, and then there is the bad kind of hurting that is a warning that the workout needs to stop soon. So reluctantly, I stopped.

I am still proud of me, too. :)

You might find the services of a good massuse makes the after workout soreness fade better. Before the next work out, or just after it are good times. The former'll loosen them, the latter'll relax them.

Good point Triaxx. For now though, I am content to sit in the hot tub and let the water jets hit the sore spots in my back. Mmmmm.....

That works too. Though if you look around and find one of those massage training schools, they usually have student's who give out massages as practice. Sometimes they're supervised, sometimes not.

Wow! Good for you Mimsy!!! :celebrate Just take it slow but remain vigilant and consistent in your efforts and you will not only see results, but will fee so much better. Won't it be great to wake up in the morning and have lots of energy vs kicking yourself in the backside to get motivated and moving?

Don't get discouraged if your results aren't noticeable right away...just keep plugging away. I wish you the best of luck & success!!! :strong:)

I was listening to the Peoples Pharmacy on PBS, most people are deficient in Vitamin D, whose symptoms include fatigue, bone loss, weight gain, general muscle pain, arthritis, and more. People with darker skin are much more likely to have the problem in a severe sort of way, since they can't make it quite as efficiently from sunlight. You might think about upping the vitamin intake also.

They were shilling a book on the show, but the name stuck.

Thats because people slather on sunblock and don't get the benifit of the sun. Nothing wrong with the sun, as long as you don't burn, we need a certin amount of sun daily. Also there are foods rich in D

(What events can indicate a need for more foods rich in vitamin D?
    Bone pain and/or soft bones
    Frequent bone fractures
Bone deformities or growth retardation in children
Lack of exposure to sunlight for any reason, including geography, use of sunscreen, or wearing of protective clothing
Concentrated food sources of vitamin D include salmon, sardines, shrimp, milk, cod, and eggs.)
