    Fascinating subject Legalsuit :)
To think that some people actually get paid a lot of money to study this subject and come out with these so called facts roflmao

    ;)

I have made so many friends, many for life, on the internet. The thing that I appreciate the most with the Internet as the media to meet someone in, instead of at work, a bar, café and so on, is because I DON'T see the person to begin with. All the prejudice that might come through the first impression are gone, allowing the person I meet (and myself of course) to truly be them self.

Of course, after I've known someone for a while, it is nice to see a piccie, especially if I'm going to meet them, helps for recognition at the airport if nothing else! :p

I do think that in many cases, physical appearance does tell a lot about the person. But I also think that in many cases, the person is nothing like his/her appearance, and in those cases, the appearance might prevent us from truly "seeing" a person for who they really are. Both ways of course, both good or bad.

On the serious side, I know a criminologist who considers and includes this as one aspect along with body language with his research of criminal minds...it can be surprisingly accurate...which I found "scarey".

I understand your points Solange, of referring to the "essence" of the person unseen, met through media, such as the internet.

The good aspect is when you come across those that are sincere. But then, there is also the sinister aspect of those who successfully hide behind the internet to build a "virtual" relationship strong enough to entice a face to face encounter.

Personally, I am a "face to face" person, because I like to take in every aspect of persons I encounter. To also observe their body language and reach my own conclusions by interactions, which will naturally vary dependent upon the situation at hand and the type of relationship (ie work or social).

So, in my own view, while a certain amount of gauging can be done via a non-physical media (eg internet), I personally rely more upon face to face encounters. (Perhaps it is the cynical side of me or simply being a "doubting Thomas", requiring physical evidence. :))

So I guess in my case, I would probably accept "Personology", based on personal "reading" experience and outcomes of persons I've met, as well as those views of a criminologist who has researched this area. Still, it's just my opinion, though.:)

I expect views on this topic will vary and probably for different reasons already posted.

Maybe I've been lucky! The 20+ or so people that I've met IRL after getting to know them online, (travelling to different countries through work makes it possible to meet a lot of people!) so far no one has been different from the person they came across as online.

I realise that there are people out there who put on a face online that does not belong to them. I think I have spotted some of them on some forums, where something about them has made me cautious, no matter how friendly they have appeared. Since I have avoided them, I have generally not been able to verify my judgement of them, except in those cases where their true self has eventually become apparent through the forum.

I agree that the face to face contact is extremely important, but for me, that becomes more important after I've gotten to know a person better. Now I miss my online friends when I can't go and see them, the internet contact and phone isn't enough to keep in touch with people you care about. Funny though that they are enough when it comes to forming those bonds! :)

LOL I've had some funny encounters with people I've associated with in written communication before meeting them face to face via work/business matters...they often thought me to be male! roflmao Guess it's because I've a different attitude in different situations. So if that's my take, then I expect others differ with situations...which reinforces my need for face to face.

But like you, I rely heavily on media communications for those friends that I can't always see face to face.:)
