my laptop is going crazy nowadays.when i try to start it up it takes longer time to start up compared to before like 2 weeks ago.also i get windows notifications saying my memory is low and when i look at windows task manager under performance the pf usage was 1.03gb and i got 1 gig ram and usually my rf usage is 550mb after this thing happened pf usage is quicky gone by using 2 or 3 programs.also it seems to me that my im not sure if it is a virus doing it or a program i installed or something wrong with my laptop.there are times when the laptop restarted itself. :cry confused :( thanks for looking

If you feel confident about editing the registry try this

    Open the Registry Editor
    start>run>typein
    regedit

Select the my computer icon at the top
    Choose file>export>all
choose filename and location (filecould be 20MB+)
    Click save
You have just backed up the registry.

Now open the tree to Hkey_Local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\control\session manager\memory management\prefetch parameters\enable prefetcher

In the right hand pane set the value to
    0 for disable prefetch
    1 prefetch application launch files
    2 to prefetch boor files
3 prefetch as many files as possible

    Exit regedit
    Restart computer

let us know how you get on

Studiot can get you right in there - remember the instructions.
Another place worth looking is at Windows virtual memory, when memory is reported low.
If you right click My computer, click properties, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, virtual memory, and see what your virtual memory setting is, I set mine to one and a half times the ram installed.

i didn't have time to do that yet but i found something else out too.when my laptop is turned off and when i want to switch it on when usb things are plugged into the usb ports it just stays in the bios and doesnt go on further.i checked the usb controllers and ports through windows and they are working proper so im confused.

i think it is either the usb hub im using has gone bad or there is something being incompatible between the laptop and the usb hub. Also is there a way of making the startup faster other than msconfig and disabling the startup programs because when i start up windows i see that welcome message for nearly a minute.its slowed down so much in very short time.

I have a pretty lower standard laptop too which I have had for a short time and struggles with memory and PF usage. Mines a 1.5ghz Celeron M, 40gb HDD,256kb memory.

I use `Diskeeper 2007` to keep my hard disk running smooth and defragmented, you get a 30 day trial to start you off with.I also use a program called `FreeRAM XP Pro` which sorts out your memory and PF usage to be more efficient and its freeware. Also someone reccomended an excellent program to me on here the other day called `TuneUp Utilities 2007`, you get a free 30 day trial, it tweaks all your system settings to run more efficiently and faster.

I dont know if thats much help cause Im not much of an expert but it works well for me! ;)

Can you use the laptop on a single usb lead , as I gather they can be picky.
Prior to doing the rounds with the various trojan/virus tools,
I assume you will, or, have tried Studiots prefetch sorting, and looked at the virtual memory.
The other possibilities are that you explrer cache is overloaded.
It is always worth going through the clear out process, as it can slow windows considerably.
While in advanced , checking virtual memory, you can click the for best performance spots, to use your memory for programs, and not background services, and syatem cache.
In Explorer, tools, internet options, settings, Put in 0 , shut down explorer, and restart, and then go back to settings, and set to say 200.( it could be recommend 50-250, at the moment, but it might actually have been set much higher.
While there , go to (advanced, IE 7) OR, manage add ons in IE6, and disable all the add ons, (you can always enable again, later, if needed.
    If you can remember all your passwords, and you have not recently added a program, which stores some information in temporary internet files, you can delete stored pages, etc;
This will make it a little slower when you first go back on the net, but from then it will be normal.

i did all that.by the way whatever usb cable or anything is connected to it it doesnt like it.once started my explorer and comp runs ok but the main problems are usb at the moment coz as soon as i turn my laptop con if the usb cable is connected it just waits till i remove it and works proper.i tried it with many usb cables and still the same.my virtual memory is in the recommended limit.also i cleared all the cache and everything.im thinking it could be a toshiba problem.

Does turning off prefetch cure the problem? doing this is not irrevocable and very easy. You can turn it back on again just as easily.

You would then be in a position to troubleshoot your USB properly, free of other issues.

The simple question, I have not seen asked, -
Toshiba recalled some batteries, .... does your laptop need to still have a good battery to work properly, when connected to another power supply?
I gather that is not the norm, but have you checked ?

It would seem that you have nothing to lose, if you can do a system restore.

You say this is still the same. How can the prefetch usage be anything if you have turned it off?

The idea of turning it off is to show whether it is a prefetch problem or something underlying which is causing it. If you have genuinely turned off prefetch and there is an underlyinfg problem you can troubleshoot it. Prefetch is often turned of in servers for databases it is quite normal.
