enjoy? not as one would find pleasure in the fact that reality is an illusion.
I do enjoy the occasional debate, though. The study of ancient philosophy? No. Thats just saying that any ideas you have had have probably been thought of already.
It's the same reason there are so many remakes of movies and many that are the same. No books are hardly original anymore either. .because its all been thought before.. .
wich can only mean that sadly, that in all the human race. .no one has their own thoughts anymore. .
where as. . "A person is smart, but people. ."
It is sad in the direction we all have gone. .

I just read "Sophie's World" because my daughter had to read it for a summer project for high school.
I wanted to be able to discuss it with her.
It's about a 14 yr. old girl who gets an intro philosophy course via mail from a secret stranger... etc...
During the plot line the reader learns about all the great philosophers throughout history.
But my favorite is from major geeks joke thread...
The revised list of Universal Truths...

I disagree you just miss what you had and want to get that feeling back,I think the universe is the most unjust cruel joke anyone could play on a sentient being.

We get to see all this,we get to know the universe is here, its alive, full of people just like us,wonder and discovery of which we will only get a small taste if we are lucky enough to get a few good years,if we are very lucky 70 years.

And after we have had our allotted years our sentience is ended FOREVER,one life/one go then its over FOREVER,this thought scares hell out of me,knowing there's nothing I can do to change it doesn't make it easier to accept,I totally understand why people turn to religion and spiritual explanations that offer a way out from this inevitable fate.

Philosophy is only scary when the people in power take it too seriously.

wow Rikky, I think you're missing the point of that quote. To know true love is a great thing in my eyes, & to never experience it in life would be a shame in my eyes. Yes losing it is a great pain, but to have never expeienced it? no thanks

You can only know great pain, (in the emotional sense), if you have known great happiness. It's the good memories and feelings that keep you going, i.m.h.o.- Life's experiences is nearly always a two-edged experience. Trick is, to know which 'edge' to focus on, i.m.o.

~ And that' as philosophical as I'm going to get for today. :-D

I don't suffer from insanity,I enjoy every minute of it.

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soonbegan to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came toinvestigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pileof cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

    Moral of the Story -
[1] Not everyone who s**ts on you is your enemy.
[2] Not everyone who gets you out of s**t is your friend.
[3] And when you're in deep s**t, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

I haven't missed the point although I did rant on out about death a bit :-D But its all the same theme having something great and then losing it.

What good are experiences if their only purpose is to remind us of how good life was? I also don't subscribe to the notion that its important what you use your lifetime for because when your dead it won't matter.

Yes love is a great thing and I think people should try to spend as much time as possible in love but only to improve their experience of life in the present.

I'll add one of my philosophy quotes then:-D

I'd rather never have tasted ice cream than watch everyone around eating it without me.

Really? I've had great experiences and happiness,I remember them but I never think about them for more than a few seconds if they pop into my mind or if someone specifically asks about them, other than that I couldn't care less.

If I'm going through a bad time my past experiences don't help me through at all the only thought that helps me through is that I won't be feeling like this is certain period of time because I I'll be doing something that takes my mind off it.

EDIT Dreamer I like the logical philosophical discussions,I'm not really into reading about philosophers of old and what they had to say but some of their quotes are pretty cool.

Yes really. Pretty hard to be all cut up about never seeing again someone you don't give a toss about. But try losing your parents wife, kids and closest friends all in a short space of time, and you may get the drift, (and yes, I have been there for the most part). Obviously, I am referring to human relationships here. One may well be upset about writing your car off or something, but it in no way equates to losing spouses, children, close friends, etc.

If you don't get anything more than a few seconds temporary pleasure out good experiences, then you're missing out on a lot. Habitual positive thoughts create a positive mindset, and add joy to life. One of the main differences between a subsistence existence and a happy and productive life, (and according to most Doctors, longer too). Positive thoughts and feelings are prime motivators.

So you don't learn from mistakes and bad times? Bad times, as unpleasant as they are, are a formative part of our psychology and behaviour. Haven't met a sane person that enjoys bad times, but most of us remember them as much, or more than anything. And for good evolutionary reasons. If we don't remember bad and dangerous/unpleasant times, we don't program our behaviour to avoid such potentially hazardous and/or unpleasant situations.

Well here’s some quasi-philosophy for ya:- The infant thinks only of the present, because it has no past to speak of, and the concept of future consequences doesn't exist yet. The child thinks manly about the future, and has very little past. The single guy/girl thinks about the present and the self, since those are his/her major concerns. The married person with children tend to think a lot more about the future, (especially their legacy, (children)) The elderly tend to think mainly about the past, since they have more memories than future.

I was gonna add a sentence that excluded memories of dead loved ones but while we are on the subject when I think of the good times I had with a person it just angers me more that they are gone it doesn't create any positive emotion,I'm really not at peace with this whole death thing.

What am I supposed to say to that,No I don't learn from my mistakes:-D Ofcourse but still the context was getting through tough times memory can help you through a logical exercise but I don't see how it can help you through and emotional experience.

I'm not saying one way is right or wrong phantom different strokes+:crap ,just saying the way I think,I'm still interested in how other people stay happy even if they don't work for me or I don't do the same.

its all a frame of mind & how you choose to look at life, if you choose to concetrate on the negative, you WILL have a negative outlook on life. On the other hand there is the always optomistic approach, which will lead to disappointment as well. Then there's the realist approach, hope for the best, prepare for the worst. (meaning, know all your options & always have your bases covered) By nature I am half optomist\realist, after over 48 years, I can wake up in the AM with a positive approach to life every day, but at the same time knowing you NEVER know what will happen. Kinda like a boyscout, always be prepared

Yeah, I agree, Rikky. I'm always looking at the ways different people have different mindsets, attitudes and methods of coping with the good and not so good. I wouldn't even try to venture to be arrogant enough to think that my methods, (which have been a lot of trial and much error, I'll admit), are right and others are wrong. Like yourself, I just try and listen and observe the experience of others, and hopefully learn something constructive from that.

Happiness or unhappiness has always been, what I term 20% environmental and 80% psychological, i.m.o. So it kinda makes sense that our habitual thinking is the primary, (but not only), factor in shaping our outlook and emotional status in life. Outside factors and other people will have an influence, but outside of survival situations, it is mainly our response to events rather than the events in themselves that determine a constructive or destructive outcome, i.m.h.o.

Yep, I too, have many things in the 'Do not retrieve or revive' Dept. Not denial - just no point in dragging them up all the time.
