So, as gal wa sharing with us her fear of flying I wondered what everyone else struggled with. I'm not talking things you dislike here and would rather not deal with...I'm talking real strong irrational fears that can make you totally spin out. Any interesting stories???

My phobia is spiders, as it is for many. Many years ago I was giving a friend a driving lesson in her battered old Renault 5. Thankfully she was pretty good as she already had her full motorcycle license. The sun was dazzling me so I dropped the sun vizor down and there dropped the spider, dangling on it's web infront of me. I opened the door in total panic and did a Starsky-style roll out of the car onto the grass verge leaving her pootling off down the road on her own LOL It's funny now.....and I think I would do the same again.......anyone with this particular phobia will understand!!!

I used to work in tunnels, tight spaces, I was ok with that until I got stuck. I began to panic and was freaked. Worked in tunnels longer, but never got getting stuck out of mind.
@ But lev I hate spiders too!

i hate slugs. probably started with my younger brothers teasing me. some years ago, i walked in after a party (late, and 'worse for wear'), and as i got to the middle of the living room, i found my self in the middle of hundreds of them!! (alright, maybe not hundreds!). my kitten at the time, had spent the entire evening catching slugs and bringing them in. (punishment for me going out?). they were everywhere, great piles of them, some half eaten, some eaten and then thrown back up. they were on the sofa, the chairs, and all over the floor. the only reason i didn't pass out immediately was the fear of falling on one. my hubby had to pick me up, screaming, and carry me upstairs. i was totally frozen with fear. i spent the next week frightened of everywhere, in case there were some he hadn't found. it gradually died down over time, but the memory still gives me the shivers.

I have no real phobias... I startle, but only until my brain categorizes what startled me. I don't like spiders because they bite me but I'm not afraid of them, and I don't like snakes that are poisonous because the little bastards are fast and i don't fancy dying.

I have vague paranoias though.. like things swimming beneath me in the ocean, because you can't see anything in the northeastern atlantic, and people breaking into the house when im alone with my daughter, but I wouldn't call them phobias because they're both logic based and I can talk myself out of them both.

Well.. i do have an intense fear of stupidity though. Generally in others.. Every day I wake up fearing how it will interfere with my daiy life... It's enough to make you stay home... ooooh. /sarcasm.

Irrational fear: MOTHS. I REALLY hate them. If one gets into my room at night I have been known to jump up and cower in a corner with a bottle of moth killing spray whimpering. They're all fluffy and flappy and stupid and have horrible eyes and *EW*

A particularly big one got into my room the other day and it flew at my monitor and I screamed and ran out of my room! I couldn't go back in there, so I ended up going to sleep in the spare room, but then realised that had a moth in it too! So finally I decided to sleep on the floor in my server room. That was the only safe place. It was also a hot night and 3 computers running made is about 36C in there. Not at all comfortable but there were no moths, so I could sleep.

Semi-rational fear: swimming over grates/grilles in swimming pools. Gives me the heebie geebies! Have been known to freak out during races with that one...

Tight spaces...if there`s an easily accessable exit I`m ok...but if I`m in a small place and someone is blocking the only egress I wig out.

Wasps, just hate them with a passion. They sting out of pure hatred and should be made extinct.

No true phobias, but I can't stand the sight of nasty wounds. If someone hurts themselves badly in my presence, I'm utterly worthless to help them unless helping them involves getting away from them (I'm great at running for clean towels and the first aid kit!). The sight of a wound will literally make me lightheaded to the point where I need to sit down else I'll wound myself landing face-down on the floor.

    Snakes **shudder**

Had a close call with a rattle snake when I was younger (wasn't bitten, but not for the snake not trying) and haven't been able to stand them since. I don't even like to see them on television.

    Irrational fear? Yes.
Any desire to confront it and get over it? No.

Wow......we sure have a variety between us!!

Tight spaces I can understand too...I can't go in sheds and stuff that are small as I have no escape from spiders.

@Laurie...you would have hated a house I lived at in Coventry...slugs used to find their way in through the cat flap!!

@goldfish...my brother is phobic of moths too. Once my b/f at the time and I visited him at his tiny digs. There was a spider AND a moth in the room. I think my b/f had had just about enough by the time we left with both my bro and I freaking out!

@mcadam.....we just destroyed a yellow jacket nest in the yard on Sunday ;)

@Huggamonsta...I understand ...just seeing or hearing the word of mine is sometimes enough to freak me out too:) We had our grandson over this weekend and he had to keep talking and saying that nasty word. Ewww. I gagged him with my hand eventually :p

My mom has a big fear of worms!!

I got attacked by a swarm of those f-ers when I was... 7? 6? I was picking berries along the railroad tracks, and one clung to the back of a leave i disturbed. in seconds i was covered in them, and I blacked out. I woke up in a kiddie pool fool of ice water and those blue tastless icy pops from the 80's with every fan in the house on me in my neighbors livinroom.

Guess it was some kinda miracle i survived... but we all know evil never dies.

anything with a stinger....but it's a rational fear. when I was 7 my brother sprayed a nest with the hose ran inside and locked the door, we had a high fence all around the back yard and the only door in was locked..I was stung 27 times..mostly on the head. I don't remember anything past him running past me and throwing the hose for about a week afterward.
I also have a "semi phone" phobia..I will use one if I HAVE to, literally avoid one whenever I can I've been known to go across town to return a call rather than calling somone.
BF swears I got beaten with one as a child and just don't remember it..
I honestly have no idea why I hate them so much though.

I feel your pain on stingers. When I was 8 I had a black wasp get stuck in the back of my shirt and stung me 8 times before it calmed down and I got the shirt off. Not fun at all.

I'll have to go with Lev and admit a phobia about spiders . . . but there is a twist. My spider phobia is only active when I'm in a house . . . when I'm out camping or hunting, I don't mind spiders at all - even one crawling on me. I just flick it off without a second thought. I dunno why that is.

    1. roaches cause my g-ma had some in her house. i don't live with her but man they can lay eggs in u and f u up.
    2. washing my hands very very well. I hate to admit it but I do. Some people take like 3 to 5 min to wash hands after taking a dump, I take way way way longer. I don't leave the water running hard but only almost leave it dripping.

Yes, I know it's weird but it's true man. I don't know about u but there's some sick f-ers out there that don't even wash there hands. aT least, when u shake my hand u know that SOB is clean. HELL YEAH!

the thing i hate most is waiting ( such as in a shopque) and mosquitoes. the waiting sometimes makes me really pissd off and i start to get nervous to the point that i beginn to sweat or walk out. just cant stand slow people
and mosquitoes are just nasty creatures. they suck ur blood and give u deseases such as malaria or even aids..even tho they are so small they kill millions of people each year especially in africa (by spreading deseases). they always ruin a nice night at a lake or river. everytime im in bed and i hear one buzzing near me ear i jump up, turn on the lights and hunt it down if it takes me an hour. cant sleep with them arround.

" roaches cause my g-ma had some in her house. i don't live with her but man they can lay eggs in u and f u up. " mother of god!! eggs under the skin...didnt know that one.. only of flys which leave eggs in ur eye and then the larvae grows in ur eye and wiggles around till it becomes a fly.. really nasty! once saw a pic of this on the net.

i live in roach paradise, and I've never heard of them causing any harm!! my cat catches the big ones, (and the geckos, and the spiders....if it moves, its food!)...) i hope you're wrong about them laying eggs under the skin! i also have two varieties of rats, tree rats, which hang out in the attic, and ground rats, which hang out in the cellar. the cat brings them in live, to show to the dogs. he then sits there snarling and munching while the dogs lay in front of him, waiting for the scraps in the same way they wait for table scraps. funny as all get out. aloha

that's odd.....maybe it's more seeing them out of their element that causes the phobia than the bugs themselves.

@Natakel...I can understand that...my spider phobia is wayyyy more intense if I am in a confined space. I don't do workshops or sheds unless the escape route is clear and big. Camping? I can run faster than the spider, but I get awful when under canvas. I guess it is kind of a spider claustrophobia, if that makes sense.

No real phobias, except I'm deathly sceeeered of computers LOL

Now to dispel a few if I may,

Cockroaches do not lay eggs in you, never have and never will. They carry an egg case on their abdomen and drop the egg case in many instances. The eggs hatch out in the case but they never deposit anything in you. The Oriental and German cockroach are the ones that can carry diseases that are harmful to humans. These diseases are deposited by the insects fecal matter and the digestive juices used by them when they are feeding. All other roaches are harmless and even quite neat to interact with (especially death'shead and hissing cockroaches).

Snakes are basically harmless creatures that do not wish to have ANYTHING to do with you. If given the chance they will move along and not bother you. The best advice when dealing with snakes is simple, leave them alone. If you merely stop and wait a bit they will move along without bothering you (yes, even the poisonous ones).

Mosquitoes are truly a wonder. Only a few carry harmful diseases and only the female mosquitoe bites. Use deet to protect yourself

Spiders, not much to say here except steer clear of them but keep them in the house because they keep your pests to a manageable level (the exceptions are the truly poisonous ones like Black Widow and any Australian spiders).

HAHAH...not a chance buddy! To me, spiders ARE the pest. Bring on the flies, moths, mozzies and heck...I'd rather let the snakes in too! :p
