I got Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 3.0 with a scanner years ago. I've used it all these years with results that were fine with me. I'm still able to use it with Windows XP, but it is not really compatible. Compatibility issues arise periodically. I really can't afford the full edition of PhotoShop, but wondered if there is a good photo editing software available that is less pricey. Obviously if I'm still basically happy with the ancient PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 3.0, I don't require anything really fancy! Can anyone make suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Patti

I agree with silas above - GIMP is excellent, esp if you're accustomed to a Photoshop-type interface. Howver, there are SO many photo editors, and many of them are 100% free (including GIMP), that it's hard to recommend just one. It really depends on your needs and your level of "photo-editory-ness" (huh?). If GIMP isn't your cup-o-tea, take a walk thru the Graphics download section here at MajorGeeks. Read the various descrpitions and try out a few apps that appeal to you.

    :-D

I waited too long to edit my above post....

Attached below is a screen shot of GIMP in action. Ignore the psychedelic green fractal- that's part of my desktop wallpaper.....

    Hi

While Gimp is very full-featured, a much simpler program is Google's Picasa, and another good program that you can use to resize/rename photos as well as edit them in other ways is Irfanview.

My wife likes Picasa (I use it on occasion); I prefer Irfanview and Photoshop myself.

    HI Patti

I agree with you if you just need basic then you dont need the full Photoshop from Adobe, its pricy to start with and not as easy to use as some think, its power comes from being able to use layers properly and even with doing training courses on it previously and chatting to friends in the graphics industry its over the top for 99% of users and really will not always give you simple great photo editing.

GIMP is good and the free similar option to Photoshop, but again it does need a bit of reading to work out what the hell it all does, I personally do like some of the image editors like IfanView and XNView as well as Google Picassa and Microsofts Live Photo Gallery and use a combination of a few of them, depending on the task, as fro instance a simple crop and redeye removal hardly needs a $600+ photoshop package!?

As you are saying compatibility is an issue what Service Pack to Windows XP are us using? do you need any suggested app to also work with other versions of Windows such as Vista/7?

I really like the latest Windows Live Photo Gallery for cataloguing your photos, to quick emailing and uploading to online services to basic editing from redeye to cropping to panoramic stitching, but the app I'm impressed with is Serifs PhotoPlus Free

The thing is to try a few of the suggestions made and see which one suits what you need it to do in editing your photos.

I hesitate to suggest another photo editor because too many suggestions can be overwhelming. But, I've been using PhotoFiltre: http://majorgeeks.com/PhotoFiltre_d4587.html to crop and resize images for selling some things on craigslist.org and eBay. I've found it easy to use. If you try it, be sure to use Save As and give the modified file a unique name when editing an image so you still have your original to go back to. If you simply click Save in PhotoFiltre, it will overwrite your original file without warning you.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I had no idea there were so many free choices. I'll try to find time soon to try some of them. I crop, resize, layer, feather, clone, erase....guess it's more than basic but far from professional. Don't know why I asked this right now when I have NO time to play and all these suggestions make me want to play! I won't try to thank you all individually, but please know I do appreciate the suggestions. I was a little leary of downloading free stuff without suggestions from the helpful folks on this board. I have at least heard of Gimp and Irfanview.

    Thanks again,
    Patti
