Recently, I had a DOS style picture of Helicopters coming up on my screen when I boot up my pc. Norton Antivirus did not catch it, so I had to do a system Restore. Also tried Stinger's latest and a few of the Norton individual removal tools, no avail. Avast freezes up my system. Norton chat said it is not what they know as the Helicopter Hell virus. Any one know this virus and how to protect against it? Thanks.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I have not heard of this particular problem. It sounds like you no longer had the problem based on your message. I would recommend two things:

    1. Make sure you only have one antivirus program installed. You mention both Norton and Avast
    2. Follow the directions in this link How to Protect yourself from malware!

TY! I usually only install avast temporarily, it's not my pc, but a friends and he paid for Norton. But I uninstall avast as soon as I run the scan, which usually I can do at least once, however not this time. Also, I did get rid of the problem using system restore, however, not knowing the source, I got it right back. I'm not positive but I think I got it right when I visited a website called WindizUpdate, for using firefox to update windows. It installs a .dll, then I kept getting asked to allow it to retrieve information about my registry. Then I rebooted and there were the helicopters again, lighting up my pc like a Lite-Brite set. I removed the .dll plugin, and have yet to reboot but I still get popups even with my Norton and Firefox pop up blockers on. If I figure it out exactly, I will report all the intel right here. Thanks for all your help!

This is not a good practice as it can mess up the Windows Secuirty Center and make it become totally non-functional. The proper and safer procedure to use if you want to use a different antivirus program (even if only temporary) is to uninstall the one on the PC, reboot, and then install the new one. When finished with your scan, revert back by the same type procedure.

If you want to do a comprehensive check for ALL malware, run the procedure in the below and we will find out what problems you may have.

Right yes I mean I am so sorry I didn't make clear that I do uninstall Norton before I temporarily install Avast or AVG or Nod32 or Kapersky, and that I only do that step when I know I have tried all other options I know of. Thank you for the link, I will attempt to get through all those diagnostics and report back here.

I got to this step...- HSRemover 3: Right-click on My Computer, Choose Manage, Double-click on Services and Applications, Click on Services. In the righthand column find "Network Security Service".....and found no such listing under Services. Is it possible it would be called something else? Is it ok to run the tool in Safe Mode anyway? In the meantime, I will move on to the next listed program. Thanks for all your help! :D Happy Holiday!!

You only need to run that Special Removal Procedure for an HSA or About:Blank hijacker if you have those hijackers. You don't have an HSA hijack based upon what you were reporting, therefore you don't need to run that procedure nor will you find that service.

All of the tools in the Special Removal Procedures sticky are for special problems and none of them have anything to do with helicopters.
