ok, the presky red-x has become a problem as of late for me. It only occurs on a select few pictures. I noticed two on yahoo.com and one on msn.com, and a recent e-mail I received. On yahoo.com, the red x appears on the right side of the page, right above the "In the News," section and another red x in the farthest part of the right corner. On msn.com, the red x appears under the "My msn, hotmail, messenger, and holidays," buttons. In the e-mail that I received, none of the pictures showed up and had the red x.

This problem has been going on for maybe a month or two now, and I have decided to try anything that might fix it. I right clicked one of the pictures in my e-mails and looked at the properties. It said "http://ads.msn.com/ads/pronws/XboxLiveCIQ959/top.gif" in the location section. One of the yahoo pictures said "http://us.a1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/a/co/compaq/powrdbyhp_blu_84x28_yahoo.gif."

It appears to me that it has to do with gif, but i'm not positive and wouldnt know how to fix it.

Also, i clicked the properties for a picture in msn and it said "http://global.msads.net/ads/1914/0000001914_000000000000000129950.gif"

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

actually, I do have outlook 2003 installed on my computer, but only my parents use it. I use comcast, but would that also block a image on the front screen of yahoo.com or msn.com?

The below fix sometimes works with red x issues. If it's JPGs too, which it does not sound like, read the Microsoft article. But it sounds like a GIF only issue. The below 11 steps are easy, not hard, like they look.

    1. Quit Internet Explorer, if it is running.
    2. Click Start, and then click Run.
    3. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then press ENTER.
    4. Locate and click the following registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
    5. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
    6. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/gif in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
    7. Locate and click the following registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg
    8. Double-click the Content Type value in the right pane of the Registry Editor.
    9. In the Edit String dialog box, type image/jpg in the Value Data box, and then click OK.
    10. Quit the Registry Editor.
    11. Start Internet Explorer and open any Web page with a JPG or a GIF image. The images are displayed correctly.

I neglected to see steps 7-9 actually included JPG, you can do those if you want to be on the safe side, but if you're in a rush you don't have to.

If the aforementioned registry fix does not work, another idea is to upgrade your IE to the most recent version.
