I'm going to put my old 400MHz PII back together for some old Win95 games, and it needs a new PSU. The mobo has a 20-pin socket that an ATX plug seems like it'd fit, but there's no 4-pin ATX power socket. Will an ATX PSU work if I can't plug in the 12V plug? Or do I need a different kind of PSU?

When the 24 pin socket was introduced the extra 4 pins were added at the end of the old 20 pin socket.
This means that if you have room to the side of your 20 pin socket you can just plug in the 24 pin plug, leaving the last four overhanging. You can also cut off the last four with a sharp knife. Some are detachable anyway.
The extra four ones are not needed on the older boards so there will be no socket for them.
The end with the extra has orange/black wires.
The end to plug in has orange/orange wires.
Make sure the clip is on the same side as normal.
