I just recenlty bought a laptop off ebay and the dvd burner will not work. I runs and spins but in the device profiles if gives this error, "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19). I've tried just about everything. I have an oem version of xp pro and i tried reloading the drivers from a xp pro disk but it didn't work. I've looked everywhere but noone seems to have a fix. There are no drivers out there for it, but i actually think its a registry problem. can it be fixed?

maybe try going into the device manager and removing the device, then reboot, and if needed, go back into the device manager and check for new hardware...or since it's a laptop, eject the drive using the proper method, then put it back in

All Acer loptops with XP OS. Also your dvd-drive is most likely a combo (it is a bad design, period ) I had the same problems...The solution = You need a nice 2 or 3 burning progs, which come with their own stuff..You Must be an Administrator and settings that is ok to use progs w/o Certificate or signatures of publisher, or only 1 is available/present..(some developers fail to include a Manifest.)..Back to the ranch..I am guessing that your 4gig plus cd, shows nothing or only 700 MB....CDRWin would be my choice of apps or NTI family of programs.,..But there is a freeware a beauty for every OS from win95 to Vista plus all Linux platforms....Make sure, that you do download the correct version..The name ? = "Infra Recorder" very simple and workhorse, the place=<http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5> that is a download page....You will be shocked how easy and fast it will show all info about your drive,....The iso, bin, cue and raw are suported with shell integration..right click the item and burned to over 4gig disk....also you can extract all those formats. My advice do not try to fix windows XP, they have their own mind. unless you know in's and out's, another word you are a power user...good luck..

Thanks for the info, i've tried that, it finds the dvd burner but says there was an error in the instalation and the drive will not function. I can't even get generic drivers to load to just use the cd-rom because it automaticaly recognises the name brand. i've checked everywhere for the drivers and even the firmware but no one has any. any other suggesions this is a tough one, i've ask everywhere and no one seems to have a fix.

is the drive even recognized in "my computer" ? (i.e. does it have a drive letter? )

    try these steps from microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/en-us
if u decide to do it manually, make sure you follow all of the steps completely.
