Playing multi format dvds?

    Hi ya'll
    I was told I could play any format dvds, i.e. region 1,2,4 etc, but my dvd player doesn't give me a choice of region. Is there software around (preferably free) that lets me play other regions other than region 1? I'm in the US but I'd like to play a movie that is region 4 (Australia) :( . The movie is not available in region 1. Any suggestions will be appreciated :D .
