Goodness, my computer has it out for me.

A week ago today, I had my harddrive and motherboard replaced. I have never had a problem with viruses, malware, or trojans before, but I seem to be making up for lost opportunity. I used internet explorer to download mozilla firefox. Since then, even if I'm using firefox, explorer occasionally goes nuts with opening new windows. Through task manager, I end the process, and the new windows stop for a while. I am not sure what triggers them. Last night, after restarting my computer, firefox failed to connect to the internet. It was odd because Trillian was connected. So, I tried to connect with internet explorer, and it worked. I uninstalled firefox, including all of my personal data. When I reinstalled, I still had no connection to the internet. When I restarted my computer again, a few trojan warnings popped up as Windows Security Alerts, I think. My symantec seems to be disabled. Additionally, firefox fails to open at all. I have no idea what's wrong and I have no idea how to fix anything. I am embroiled in exams and this stress is just eating away at me. Please help.

    Danielle

P.S., I have attached the logs from all of the vista cleaning procedures.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you for your help. I did what you suggested and have attached the logs. It appears that something good has happened in that Symantec can run a full scan (before, it would run for less than a second before saying it was finished). However, I cannot get firefox to work. I tried to uninstall it, but Window's just ignored my clicking uninstall. I reinstalled Firefox to try to just overwrite what was broken, but that also failed to work. I'm not sure what other issues may have been fixed or what may still exist. I do know this is frustrating and I appreciate all of your help.

    You're welcome.

Please explain in more detail what your problem is.
    • Does the FireFox browser open on your screen at all?
    • If it opens, is your problem that it just will not connect anywhere?
    • Does it work if you shutdown Symantec and also Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch?
    • Does it work if you boot in safe mode?
I need to know the exact details of your problem. It does not sound like malware at this point and your logs are all clean.

You could try using the below to uninstall FireFox.

    Your Uninstaller! 2008

If it works, immediately reboot. After reboot:

Backup the below file to save your Bookmarks:
    c:\users\Danielle\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\8wijbmmv.default\bookmarks.html

Now delete the below folders before you attempt to reinstall FireFox.
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    C:\Users\Danielle\AppData\Local\Mozilla
    C:\Users\Danielle\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

    Now reinstall FireFox.
