    Subject: Jury Duty Scam

JURY DUTY SCAM: This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity just got stolen. The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado! This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

It is really scandalous that with all the money they make that the ISPs and telephone companies can not do a thing about these scams (or will not) with the combined resources of the ISPs and the security services they seem powerless but they always seem to be able to go after the music pirates or is that just commerce??

we the public have to spend our hard earned dollars/euros to buy ever more sophisticated protection to try and protect our domain.

Well shamefully I'm a skipper. I believe in the old saying,"I won't trust my life to 12 people who couldn't even get out of jury duty" Thats bad I know, :(

Actually you have it backwards, the people being prosecuted don't exactly have a choice. What if you were the one being prosecuted, and were innocent? I would want people who care enough to do their civic duty. Me, when called, I go. The one time I put the notice aside and forgot I called and rescheduled, no big deal. When I had young kids and it would have been a burden I opted out, again, no big deal. I have found jury duty to be not a big burden, and consider it the prices of democracy.

The main reason I would not want to pass judgment on another person is that I don't believe you receive all the data needed to do so. Whether they have committed pass crimes is considered irrelevant, witnesses can be mistaken or totally dismissed completely. I think the judicial system is too tainted to draw a positive conclusion either way. I would not want to risk sending an innocent person to prison or letting a maniac go free.

That has to be on of the better scams I'v seen thanks for the warning,to be successful it still breaks my golden rule of not giving out personal info to someone who called me but on an off day just wanting to get them off the phone sort it out who knows they may have got me.

    Thanks:)
