    Hello All,

I noted that my computer was going really slow after watching music videos on YouTube. Task manager showed explorer.exe going at 99% and wouldn't stop. Restarted the computer and it didn't help when I went to watch the downloaded videos (just from YouTube).

Got panicky, ran through the R&R. I think that it's working ok for now - haven't noted any hang-ups.

After running ComboFix, there's now an IE icon on the desktop. Is this usual? Can i get rid of it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It appears as though Combo took care of the malware. Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    TimW,

Thanks for such a quick reply, especially over a Holiday weekend. So far no additional problems have been noted.

Removed ComboFix and MGtools, flushed the System Restore points.

    Just 3 questions for you:

    1. Can you tell me what was removed by Combofix (and where it is in the log)?

    2. I just realized I didn't have the hidden files/folders and operating system files open as suggested in Step #2 of the R&R. (MGclean didn't have the .bat after it). Should I run through it again? Sorry...

    3. Where can I make a donation to you/Major Geeks? I lurk daily and am amazed at how busy you all are.

    Thanks again for your help.

Just look in the combo log you attached.
When you removed the MGTools, did you do so using the MGclean function? Or did you just delete the folder? The MGClean.bat was in that folder.

You are most welcome....safe surfing. :)

    TimW,

I figured I goofed somewhere when all I saw was just the MGclean, sans .bat. I double-clicked on that file and MGTools folder and the MGtools.exe disappeared.

Then it probably ran just fine. What issues are you having?

    TimW,

Having no problems that I can detect.

Just 2 quick questions and then we can close this thread:

    1. Should I leave the folder options as suggested in Step #2 of the R&R?

    2. ComboFix left an IE icon on my desktop - can I delete this?

Thanks again for your time. I'll check out the sticky in the lounge.

My final instructions in post #3 should take care of question #1. As to the icon, right click and choose properties and then click on check path (IIRC). If it is a duplicate, remove it. If it goes no where, remove it. You can always remove desktop short cuts and if needed go to the program exe and again right click and choose send to --> desktop.
